Okay, so I went ahead and did it my way and it took like 5min. Still, that should be some sort of layer switch, provided I’m not overlooking it. Add that to the long list of improvements the AE team will probably “get to” around release, oh, I don’t know …13?

P.S. Lousy weather and deadlines make Mousel bitchy.

    Dave,

Thank you for the great facts on NTSC related framerates (i.e. 29.97 and 23.976). It has solved a lot of problems for me and definitely changed my assumptions.

    Richard,

I recently had a similar problem to yours. When rendering the animation, frames were being duplicated but the frame total was accurate. It seemed as though random frames were just being dropped out in favor duplicates. Output was 900 frames at 23.98fps. Codec was ‘animation’. It lead to a nasty stuttering effect that took all the fluidity out of the work. Unfortunately, the deadline was up and we had to go with what we had. And, on a slightly depressing note (or a positive one, depending on your outlook), the client didn’t even notice. I’ve only been using After Effects for a year and a half, so naturally, I’m much more ignorant than most on this forum. Hopefully the answer is a simple matter of not setting up the render properly.

    Thanks Dave,

I did a double take when I read your signature. KRCG is the CBS affiliate here in Columbia, MO. I work for KMIZ, the ABC affiliate. Had you been from KRCG as opposed to KCRG we would’ve had to have gotten together to make sure beer still worked.

February 25, 2008 at 3:43 pm in reply to: Animating CC Hair

    Mike,

First, thanks for going above and beyond to help me out, I appreciate it immensely. Unfortunately it’s still not working and I’ve concluded that CC Hair cannot be manipulated in 3D space. Your tutorial was great but the rotation was only in 2D space. I keyed the motion of my tennis ball using the rotation values (x,y,z) of CC Sphere. CC Hair just didn’t seem to want to move in 3D space.

If you rotate a layer with CC Sphere using the effect’s X,Y,Z rotation values you get a pretty sweet 3D rotating ball.
If you apply CC Hair it just doesn’t follow along. Even with matching keyframes or expression pick whipping.

Thanks again for all your help. I want to keep working on this because I still think there’s some weird solution to it but my next two weeks will be 12 hour days and several of my clients are currently using me for a punching bag, including the one for this spot.

Mike, I think we perfectly understand each other but the problem is that, unexpectedly, the hair does not rotate when animated separately, pickwhipped or otherwise. That’s what’s got me so confused.

I tried it again last night using two simple Solids. I applied CC Sphere to both layers and added CC Hair to just one (effectively making it just a sphere of hair). It looked right but after animating the sphere itself and parenting the hair to it, the hair still stood in place. I used expressions to pick whip the individual rotation values of the hair to the sphere and that didn’t work either.

February 22, 2008 at 12:22 am in reply to: Setting up a vector depth mask for the CC Snow Effect.

If I were you I’d make four or five Snow layers. Turn on their 3d swatches and move them around in 3d space on their z-axis’. Keep in mind that you’ll need to make the dimensions of those snow layers bigger than your composition dimensions because once you start pushing the layers to the back on the z-axis you’ll notice them getting cut off if they’re only the size of your work composition. Once those are set up plop your text layer in the middle of them. Make the snow layers that are ‘closest’ to you bigger and the snow layers in the background smaller. For an added effect use FAST BLUR on the snow layers that are big and up close. This will make them look out of focus and help sell your effect. Maybe even a slight glow would help. Also, if you have gotten your tax return back, spend it on Zaxwerks! It’s 3d text (plus other cool 3d options) for those of us too poor to buy a separate 3D program! And if you’re going to buy that, you might as well spring for CC’s own Serge Hamad video tutorial, available thru the CC Master Series Collection.

    Enjoy!

February 11, 2008 at 8:54 pm in reply to: CMOS and rolling shutter – solution?

    Ryan,

I, very much like you, am saving up to buy an HD camera and also like you am looking at Sony. The EX-1 definitely impressed me at first, and still does in many respects, but the rolling shutter issues and 4:2:0 color space are near-deal breakers for me. I plan to use my new camera (whenever I get it) for compositing, fast motion “run and gun” footage, studio recording and a plethora of other things. To be honest, if I had the money to buy today I cannot truthfully say whether I’d go for an HVX200 or an EX-1. Both have their ups and downs and, like Dan said, I’m looking forward to Panasonic’s answer to the EX-1. Even so, whatever that new Panny offering is, you can be sure it won’t solve all my/our problems. Some amount of compromise will have to be made on our parts (unless we win the lottery that is…) I look forward to hearing what your eventual choice will be when you’re ready to make it.

February 4, 2008 at 3:03 pm in reply to: 3D kmz file

    Hey Ed,

I was wondering the same thing. So far, I don’t think you can directly import .kmz OR .dae files into AfterEffects directly. I tried playing with some 3D .dae files in Photoshop in an attempt to bring them over to AE in a way that would keep their 3D-ness. No luck. I loved the 3D watch tutorial by Eran Stern but really it isn’t so much a 3D watch as a 3D-esqe 2D image, scaled up.

February 4, 2008 at 2:55 pm in reply to: extended plugins for google 3d warehouse

    Ekim,

I had this same exact problem (No “get model” button and no saved file after it supposedly “saved”.) So here’s what you’ll need to do…

    Go to this website: https://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse

Now you’ll basically be looking at Google’s 3D Warehouse site outside of Photoshop. Now all you have to do is navigate to the desired model, click the pull-down arrow on the “download model” button to reveal 3 options. The bottom option, to download a “collada” .zip file, is the one you want. Once downloaded, unzip and you’ll get a folder with the name of your model. Inside it is another folder called models. Inside of it is a .dae file. This isn’t the .kmz you were probably expecting but Photoshop seems to recognize it in a similar way and also lets you interact with it in the same way.

    Hope this helps!
