March 5, 2008 at 2:42 pm in reply to: Adobe Media Encoder in CS2 no likey FLV (On2VP6)!Your Flash clips are probably fine. Download the Wimpy FLV player (wimpyplayer.com) and drag your FLV files into the viewer. FLV files won’t play on the stock media players.

Hit the maximize button in the upper right corner. This will squeeze Premiere to fill just the left hand screen. Undock the project window (small triangle button in the upper right hand corner of the window) and drag it over to the right hand screen (This is a typical layout). Now the popup windows will be centered on the left hand monitor.

February 28, 2008 at 1:44 pm in reply to: PPro CS3: Installed, initial thoughts, crash! No, but I do work on other peoples’ systems, and I know there can be configuration issues. Apple has an advantage here because they have a closed system, and they don’t allow people to build their own workstations. Avid is also very strict with system specs (at least on their higher end systems), and Matrox (I have an Axio card) also is strict on certifiable configurations. This is frustrating for people who insist on beating their own path, but makes for a more reliable system.

Vincent,
I’m a big believer in RAID protection, and it is absolutely necessary on my own 16 drive array. My point was that it is more expensive, and a two drive RAID 0 array is reasonably secure, in my opinion. If I wanted to stripe more than a few drives together, though, I would take your advice for sure.

February 27, 2008 at 10:06 pm in reply to: “application failed to return a video frame” !!!SOS!!!!What makes you think that? Since it states right on the Adobe website “not certified for Win XP 64-bit”, you would have to be quite adventurous to give it a try, and you shouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t work.

February 27, 2008 at 9:58 pm in reply to: PPro CS3: Installed, initial thoughts, crash!Sometimes Premiere will give you the option to save, sometimes not… just like FCP. Methinks you may have system issues. It is not normal to crash frequently. Of course, Premiere has it’s limits, and if you are editing large projects with many timelines open, or have many applications open simultaneously, or are dealing with odd file formats and settings, this will affect the stability. But I have never seen Premiere crash when I was browsing fonts in the titler.

Vincent, 32-bit XP can only handle 4 GB of RAM. And I must say I differ with you on the RAID setup. Two drives striped RAID 0 in XP is a lot cheaper than three drives and a RAID controller card. And three drives running RAID 5 wouldn’t be much faster. A two drive RAID 0 setup should be fairly secure with the quality of drives these days. I’d save the money (unless you plan to add more drives to the array later).

February 26, 2008 at 9:28 pm in reply to: PPro CS3: Installed, initial thoughts, crash!I find CS3.1.1 very solid – as good as any version I have worked on. The titler has changed a bit from 1.5, but it’s probably for the better. Yes, you now have to name your titles before creating them. Note the very handy “make new title based on current title” button. “CTRL-T” now opens the titler instead of F9, but you could change it back with the keyboard customization settings.
I personally haven’t seen the instabilities you are experiencing. Could it be that you are still getting used to the new features? Maybe you have a corrupt font file.

February 26, 2008 at 9:03 pm in reply to: Adobe CS3 and AXIO 3.1 Backward compatabilityMake sure you update Premiere CS3 to 3.1.1. I had to uninstall Axio Utils before the Premiere 3.1.1 update would install (then reinstall Axio Utils and the 3.1 patch); but other than that, no issues that I am aware of. When you open a CS2 project, you get a warning that any applied Matrox color correction filters will be updated to the new advanced color correction filter.
