Have you tried loading Ultra CS3 on your Vista installation? My guess is that it would work.

It sounds like you may be running out of RAM. What does Task Manager say?

In CS3 with 4 GB RAM on 32-bit XP, I used to encounter low memory issues constantly with large HD projects. Closing unneeded timelines, switching the project window to list view, and turning timeline picons off seemed to help a bit. (Restart Premiere after changing these settings).

Now on CS4/64-bit Vista, and 8 GB RAM, those problems seem to have gone away. I just finished a three hour wedding shot on HDV (6 hours of source material), and the project loads in less than a minute. I edited the whole project over the course of a week, and burned a Blu-Ray disk with nary a crash.

This won’t answer your question, because I’m on a PC. But I recently upgraded my system from CS3 on XP to CS4 on 64-bit Vista, and upped my RAM to 8 GB.

On CS3, Premiere would choke on large HD projects – low memory issues. Now on CS4, everything is working like a dream, even on large HD projects, and with multiple apps open. I don’t think I’ve had a crash since the upgrade. Certainly, Premiere’s native file handling is a real time saver, and I’m getting better than 90% utilization on all four cores of my single quad core processor when rendering and exporting.

The real surprise is that I’m liking Vista. After you disable all the c**p Microsoft put in to protect us, it is turning into a pretty sweet OS.

When I went to “Load Actions” in the twirl down menu, the actions folder appeared empty. But Explorer showed the six stock .atn files in the folder. I found I could drag the desired file from Explorer to the “Load Actions” window, and the actions would load.

Thanks everybody. This is a big help. It’s always fun to find hidden goodies that make your life easier.

I’d use whatever HD project preset your computer/disk system is capable of playing back in real time – from uncompressed HD to DVCPRO HD to XDCAM EX (I-frame MPEG). If your system balks at HD playback, edit in an SD project, then import that project into an HD project and rerender. Actually, Premiere should let you go straight to export without rendering if you don’t need to view in real time first.

The project trimmer might work for you (Project Manager). Copy your project with trimmed clips (no handles). Premiere will create new individual clips for each clip in your movie, and copy them to a new folder.

I’m wondering what would happen if you put your audio on the Premiere timeline and exported video and audio in the same encoding pass instead of bringing them in seperately?

How about printing the clips to HDV tape from a FCP system? You would probably have to set the timeline timecode for each clip, and timecode breaks would make things more complicated. I’m not sure FCP will output timeline timecode during print to tape, but if it does, this might work.
