yes, but the HDW-M2000 is an HDCAM record deck.

make sure the deck Reference is set for INPUT when doing an insert edit.

if you are capturing HDV direct through Firewire “Start/Stop Detect” is on by default. this will make a new clip with every start/stop of the record function. it rocks.

to turn it off, go to the Log and Capture window, open the Capture settings tab, and un-check Start/Stop Detect.

this feature only works when in DV or HDV firewire capture mode. Start/Stop Detect isnt available under the other Easy Setups.

February 22, 2008 at 5:41 pm in reply to: XServe RAID upgrade to 750GB drives

i am not 100% on this because it’s been awhile since i’ve setup an array, but i believe that Disk Utility can’t see the individual drives, only the LUNs once they are created in RAID Admin. so go ahead and create the array and see if everything works.

i can’t comment on the firmware version, or if all the hard drive monitoring tools will work, because i havent tried this swap out yet. but you should be able to create the LUNs just fine.

since Apple discontinued the Xserve RAID, i’m sure i’ll be in this hard drive swapping boat with you soon.

btw, also make sure that you are running the latest RAID firmware and Xsan 1.4.2 if you’re creating LUNs over 2TB in size.

    thanks for the response

i wish that you were right, but i dont believe this is a unique problem because i’m seeing it on multiple systems in my office, people have responded to my previous posts with similar problems but no solutions (on multiple forums), and i also read a post that Apple changed how Quicktime and FCP deal with video files – so things captured by 6.0.2 can be reconnected by 6.0.2, but not things captured or exported by earlier versions of Final Cut. Final Cut and Quicktime now attach metadata to files in a different way thats not backwards compatible – according to other posts.

because of these issues and the multiple systems i’m dealing with, i have done the trash prefs/repair permissions/reboot stuff, but i’m not going to start doing reinstalls yet. ideally i would go back to 5.1.4 and not deal with this, but we have too many projects that are currently 6.0, 6.0.1 or 6.0.2

i should have also mentioned that Visual Hub isnt the best looking encoder. you get $22 worth. Chris makes a valid point with on2. it looks really good.

if you have Macromedia Flash 8, it will install an FLV video exporter into Final Cut’s Quicktime Conversion menu. so yes it can happen. but its expensive, so might not be an option for you.

you can also use Visual Hub ($22). its a great cheap swiss army knife and compliments Compressor well. export a self-contained (not reference movie) quicktime at current settings, drop it into Visual Hub. check the “Raw .flv Format” if you need a .flv extension. leave it unchecked if you need .swf extension. then tweak the FLV settings, and you’re good to go. make sure you tweak the settings or else it will export at the same res your source clip is.

if you are running an Xsan, i would suggest replacing the 2 drives that the SAN uses for metadata. then you can get your answer on whether or not this works, and you wont lose any of your data. but this is only if you’re running an Xsan.

where did you hear that IDE drives are being discontinued? with the massive installed based of computers that still use IDE drives (including 75% of my office computers), i have a hard time believing that. yes they are on their way out, but i bet drives and deals on those drives will be available for a long time.
