    I have the GTX570 and love it. i got it because it’s the most powerful nVidia card you can get for the Mac Pro without needing another power supply. I ordered it on eBay from seller MacVidCards, who flashes PC cards for Mac. If you get an expander, then you don’t have to worry about power as much as they will have plenty of power for even the largest cards. I will let others chime in on the expander options, but I believe the most popular is the Cubix Desktop 4

  • once you’ve installed this driver, all updates are handled in the CUDA preference pane in System Preferences.

    everything you’ve gone through was to get the development tools installed for developing CUDA applications. you don’t need to do any of that. but since you might have mucked something up, you might need to do a clean install as Juan suggests

  • I believe this is if you want to develop apps for CUDA. You just want to run CUDA.

    The Apple support forums are terrible. I don’t think there’s a single Apple employee on there, and if there was, they wouldn’t give you advice about these cards as the Mac Pros didn’t ship with them.

  • As Juan says, it should work as the nVidia drivers are built-in to 10.8.2. You may need to download the CUDA drivers from nVidia directly. i installed these with no issue.

    because it’s a stock card, and not flashed from Macvidcards, you won’t get the Apple boot screen, but it should operate as normal otherwise.

    since you’re already running the card and 10.8.2, i would try uninstalling the CUDA driver, and then reinstalling. here:

  • i have a Mac Pro 4,1 with a GTX570 running the latest CUDA drivers, but running 10.7.5. I know quite a few other Resolve users are running a similar setup with 10.8.2, so you should get some replies.

    but first off, is this a PC card, or a Mac-flashed card from Macvidcards?

    Same thing happened to me years ago when Apple discontinued the Xserve RAID. I was set to order the very next day, but had to wait a few months before the Promise RAID was ready to go. I’m glad we had the time to wait, but it was scary going with a new company.

    I hope this isn’t true. Active is one of the best.

    This is great. Dual online or active nearline is never really discussed because of the perceived doubling of cost. Thanks for the reminder.

    I’m curious, how many SAN integrators on this board install dual online or active nearline systems? Do you backup your SAN everyday? Personally, I’ve done none. I get my clients in the habit of putting all of their footage/media to LTO before it hits the SAN so there’s a backup before work begins. Then the project files themselves are backed up multiple times during editing. Yes, it will take awhile to recover from LTO, but for many of my clients the cost/benefit of having a dual system isn’t there.

    like Alex, i believe that the flushing would be load dependent. Promise is probably asking for the maximum interval between forced flushes. 12 seconds at 400MB/s would be 4.8GB. there’s no way the caches are that big. at full tilt, it’s probably flushing almost instantaneously. whereas when there’s nothing going on, it will flush every 12 seconds no matter what.

    I’ve mostly been installing Ethernet SANs based on SAS RAIDs using ATTO cards, so i haven’t had to think about this for awhile. it would be great to hear from Steve over at Small Tree about what their Titanium does with caching.

    The last Xsan system I installed used Promise Vtrak RAIDs, which had WriteThru and WriteBack. i grabbed the manual to refresh my memory.

    from the Promise Manual:

    WriteBack – Data is written first to the cache, then to the logical drive. Better Performance. VTrak as a cache backup battery to protect data in the cache from sudden power failure.
    WriteThru – Data is written to the cache and logical drive at the same time. Safer.

    once a month the cache batteries will recondition themselves. this forces the system into WriteThru mode until the batteries come back online. the Vtraks have dual controllers, and the caches will mirror each other in each controller in case one controller fails.

    you can also specify the interval that the caches flush to the drives. between 1-12 seconds. i’m not in front of the RAID, so i’m not sure what the default is or what it’s currently set to. so i guess the most would be 12 seconds, but the batteries in the cache last a few days.

    this doesn’t answer your question directly, but i avoid this situation buy using battery backup units on all RAIDs and servers that are large enough to allow time to be shut down correctly. all the RAIDs have power switches on their backs, so it’s pretty difficult for someone to turn one off accidentally.

    if say, we lost power overnight while computers were rendering files to the main SAN, the battery backups are distributed in a way that the edit systems will lose power (thus killing their renders) before the SAN loses power. so the possibility of corrupted files is lessened (because all file writes to the SAN will have stopped).

    i use ATTO cards that have “CacheAssure” which is ATTO’s version of battery-less cache backup for the RAID controller.
