thanks Jake. i love the panel too, so i’m disappointed to be running into issues. BMD support tells me that they haven’t changed the panel driver in awhile, so downgrading my Resolve probably won’t make a difference. but i’m gonna try it anyway.

now i’m wondering if i have another issue that might be slowing my Resolve down. since i’m new to it, it might not be optimized correctly, so i’m going back through all my settings.

    Hey Danny

based on what you’re saying, and what John is saying about testing Infotrend units, i think the issue is burst rates vs. realtime tuning. this is why most out-of-the-box IT equipment doesn’t work in an editing setup. when you’re moving files around, everything is treated the same and gets there when it gets there. there can be spikes or dropouts in bandwidth, and no one notices. with realtime video, you need frames delivered consistently over time. you need hard drives and controllers with lower than normal latency. this will mean lower burst rates, but more consistent performance for editing to multiple clients. most IT-based boxes can still support a few editing stations before having issues, even if they’re not tuned for editing, so i’m surprised you’re having issues with so few users. but yes, your issue is probably your Infotrend and possibly the Dell switch.

nevermind on the Dell switch. it looks like it supports 10GbE and link agg on 1GbE just fine, according to their website. i’m still waking up here 🙂

and it uses HDMI cables for stacking. i’ve never seen that before.

anyway, give us some more info on how the NAS is connected to the switch and how you’re doing your tests. if you enable jumbo frames on the NAS, make sure you’re enabling them on all the Macs as well. also, log into the switch to make sure that Jumbo Frames and Flow Control are allowed to pass though. i’ve had switches that had these features turned off by default.

what happens if you take a computer and connect directly to the NAS on one of the 1GbE ports?

reading Infotrend’s site, i’m noticing that this NAS does a lot of background stuff like data deduplication. is all that stuff turned off?

how is your NAS connected to your switch? it looks like the NAS comes with four 1GbE connections and/or two 10GbE. if you’re using four 1GbE, it looks like this switch doesn’t support link aggregation, from a quick read of Dell’s site. from what i can tell, the 10GbE ports on this switch are for stacking. I’m not sure if they can be used with a NAS, but i don’t have any experience with this switch.

do you get drop frames when only 1 station is editing from the NAS, or when multiple stations are trying to use the NAS at once? when you do your speed tests and get 110MB/s, are you running that test on a single station, or testing multiple stations at the same time? this is one of the differences between a stock NAS, and one tuned for editing work.

    Thanks Vagelis

Nice to know it’s working correctly for someone. I was getting worried as others were posting their issues. I originally had the ethernet going through a router, but then I tried a direct connection to Port 1 using DHCP (recommended in the Euphonix manual) and I had the same sluggishness. I will try using a static IP address. i also haven’t used the crossover cable as Macs don’t need them, but I’ll give it a shot.

btw, i tried to contact Avid support and they only offer complimentary support for 90 days. i bought my panel in Sep 2012, so they’re saying I have to pay $60. you have to be kidding me. i wonder if they determine its a Resolve problem, if they will refund my $60.

January 15, 2013 at 5:08 am in reply to: DaVinci Resolve 9/Avid Artist Color delay

I’m having this same delay issue on a Mac Pro 4,1 with nVidia GTX 570 card. I don’t understand why there’s such a high latency with the Artist board. it worked perfectly in Apple Color.

I’m using Resolve 9 Lite. I wonder if it’s a bug in R9 and if it works OK in R8? I haven’t tried this board with R8.

January 11, 2013 at 8:42 pm in reply to: Drive Upgrade for my Caldigit HDPro 2

There’s 2 parts to this question that i think you’re mixing together:

    1. Can you replace CalDigit drives with non-CalDigit drives
    2. Can you use non-enterprise drives such as desktop drives.

with number 1, i believe that you can, as long as you already have the sleds, which you do. i think one of my clients did this on an HDPro. i fired off an email to them and i’m waiting to hear back. on the systems i built with CalDigit RAID cards that used the 4 internal Mac Pro bays, we used non-Caldigit drives.

with number 2, absolutely not. you want to use Enterprise grade drives such as the Western Digital RE or the Hitachi Ultrastar. these are designed to work in RAID environments both physically (spinning in close proximity to other drives) and in firmware (spin up time, not going to sleep, etc). you also get a longer warranty (5 years) with enterprise drives. they don’t cost as much as drives directly from CalDigit, but they will be more expensive that desktop drives. don’t go cheap here. if you use desktop or “green” hard drives, your RAID will go offline repeatedly. it’s not that it will be slower, it’s that it will be incredibly unstable. this wasn’t always the case, but this is the cost of manufacturers making their cheap hard drives even cheaper.

January 11, 2013 at 4:18 pm in reply to: Premiere Pro CS6: XSAN vs MetaSAN

    Hey Howard

Great point. I’m curious, is that support from Apple directly, or are you talking about support from an integrator/specialist?

With Xsan, you’re pretty much on your own, which is part of why it’s now free. You need a specialist because you’re not going to get any support from Apple. If you have a better support team for MetaSAN/MetaLAN, then I agree that Patrick should stick with that.

I have never used MetaSAN or MetaLAN

But to answer your other question, Premiere Pro works great in an Xsan environment.
