Yeah it takes a bit of trial and error to get everything right. Where I work there’s a lot of different editing systems. For quantels I create my AE projects 59.97 d1 ntsc, but render at 29.97 lower field first. If I am sending an animation with alpha that will be composited on the quantels, it needs to be 29.97 all the way through, rendered in frames.
For FCP, I use the Apple FCP Compressor, 29.97 frames to playout live. For the Avid systems, I use the Avid Meridian compressor and frames.
Point is set up a few test renders, make em short, but complex enough to cover what you need them to do. Render with different outputs. Then just remember what looks best and doesn’t take forever to render. AE is cool in that you can create render templates with all your settings. Thats a lifesaver.
Its a bit of a process, but do it once and it’ll keep everything from looking like poo at the end of the day.
