I second that. Archive.org is a good place to start. I plan on uploading a whole bunch of Ron Paul Blimp footage to archive.org once I have a few spare days laying around.

Now that is the kind of progressive change we want to see! i still adore the AVC Intra codec and it’s specs but I just cannot ignore how beautiful the footage looks with the 1/2″ CMOS. I have heard so many wonderful things about it’s keying qualities as well. I was highly geared up to purchase a Panasonic HPX-170 and then maybe even the HMC-150 but now am fully sold on the EX1 and we should be getting ours in the next couple weeks. I cannot wait to start keying with the EX1, I have had such headaches with the chroma smoothing/left to right edge crust on the XL2.

The JVC has some slick features. Would be nice if the EX1 upgraded to have a Pre-roll function.

Why is everyone putting out more 1/3″ chip cameras? Depth of Field?

I think this camera would do much better if it was 1/2″.

Pre-record Cache rocks! Every solid state camera needs this! I predict that even the cheapos will have this as standard issue in 2 more years.

I think it is really cool that it is recording to .mov files, it would also be cool if FCP just accepted the *.mp4 wrapper (Apple are you listening).

We are about to buy an EX1 and I would have second guessed myself if this camera had an 1/2″ chip. We will be doing a lot of keying and want to get nice keys for the new era of big screen HD broadcast. I can’t bring myself to buy a 1/3″ camera for this when 1/2″ is here in a affordable EX1 that can pull some amazing keys natively and more so when captured uncompressed to ProRes HQ.

Has some pretty cool features, now it just needs a bigger full raster chip.

What are you using to step down into the 1/8″ TRS on the iMic?

I suspect that is your problem. Also are you using the battery for the phantom power?

You can carry some inline XLR attenuators in the future if you can’t control each channel separately.

B & H sells some that have 3 levels of attenuation.

What about a super thin over the ear Country Man E6. People wear them all the time and they come in 4 colors so you can match the flesh one.

Overhead boom will give much better sound.

If your subjects are going to be stationary you will get much better sound using a overhead boom mic (pointed towards the heart). A Rode NTG-2 is inexpensive and will give much better results than any lav will.

Countryman makes some of the best lav mics btw. Sennheiser makes some very nice transmitters and receivers, one of the indsustry standards is the ew 100-ENG G2 (Evolution Wireless Generation 2). Pair that with a countryman and you will have a slick lav setup but will run over $1,000 too!

Lavalier mics can really pic up some room echo if the acoustics are bad (most are). Lavs have their application but a boomed super or hyper cardioid are much better options.

There are three components to the lav solution though, transmitter, receiver and mic. A boom pole and Rode are cheaper. You can buy a whole kit with deadcat and all at B&H for $500’ish.

Everyone should have a boom pole and shotgun anyways. I learned that the hard way. Tried using the mic that comes with the Sennheiser EW100 G2 system and got horrible audio for a while. Then switched to the NTG-2 and everything changed!

I do highly recommend Barry Greens “Sound for Film and Television”, awesome video plus he is a good teacher.
