That’s the thing. Everytime i read an article like this one I remember that Christianity invented the whole concept of purgatory back in the middle age, I mean, come on, mr. Gates is to be commended for being a great human being just because he donated a lot of money for this fund? So, now, because of this we should all forget about Microsoft behavioral mistakes? I learned a lot from apple, not only because they invented the PC, but they tought me to “think different” and to be different as well. They were the first ones to make it easy for us mortals to use a computer. Apple is one of the most progressive business in the industry but they don’t go out shouting their names to everyone. That’s, by the way, the way mr. Christ tought the christians to behave, wasn’t it? I might be wrong coz It’s been a while I attended to religious classes.
As a reminder, one video apple put out without much fanfarre.

Hi,
Even tho I’m now an offline editor, and I basically work on avid mc everyday because I really like it. I have been a motion designer in the past and like you lived in AE and used fcp as a compositor.
There’s no question about it. Get Premiere. I was very snobbish against premiere on the past, but the ui being cumbersome is not true anymore, at least since the “pro” version came along. You can still work with s lot of layers like fcp did and it’s very similar. And you get full 64bit with the cuda acceleration that will help you in AE. And just the dynamic linking should be your killer feature. Come on, I used to dream about that on my designers days.
But yeah… Take a look on the premiere to fcp tutorials videos on the net.
Avid is amazing for editing offline and althought it is a very capable compositor, it’s a bit cumbersome and not really intuitive for someone that comes from a graphics background.
Cheers,
E.

August 19, 2011 at 1:57 pm in reply to: What happened to the APIs Apple was going to release in the next “few weeks”?Dont forget to get davinci in your list. It seems that it is quickly becoming the new Apple color. Oh and if you could make something like AAF with linked files export (from avid) it would be a godsend for the Sound designers out there.

Does this work with merged clips as well? If i could transfer all my merged synced work, it would be a godsend. Im tired of the constant crashing on my FCP because of the xdcam media.

This is a very good workflow for working with red footage from avid to color but one could adapt it:
https://avidscreencast.com/2010/02/15-red-workflow-iv-conform-from-avid-to-apples-color/I hope it helps. There’s also a QuickTime plugin that you can use to see avid’s mxf.
Cheers,

It’s interesting that in several parts of the world, south america, for example, there’s a difference between and “Editing” and a “Montagem”. So the professional that usually works in the film business is called a “montador” and the person that works in everything else is an “editor”. It’s a bit snob, but that is what it means. It comes from the french school of filmmaking. I guess that the term editor comes from people that started working with tapes and all the professionals generated by that. Montage is more for theatrical release. So, one could say that fcpx is designed for editors, not montage professionals.
Is there any similar terms in English?

I didn’t know about Dirac. The idea was very good until I checked it for quality and found this study.
https://keyj.emphy.de/video-encoder-comparison/It seems it’s even worse than mpg2 for medium bitrates.
Interesting tho. BBC being public, it could have been a good idea. -
Avid MC although supports ProRes via AMA. it’s not, by avid words, suitable for editing complex and large projects. Everything that comes via AMA, for that matter. They still want you to convert to dnxhd.

[Andrew Richards] “roRes is FCPX’s preferred codec. It is what everything renders as and is the “optimized” and proxy media as well. FCPX doesn’t let you define HQ, LT, or 4444 for it’s optimized media, but it will work with those variants happily.”
My question is more about the role of ProRes in the industry. It’s about the demise of FCP as an NLE at the moment. We are on the verge of becoming file-based in the delivery process to the final clients (meaning tv networks and studios), not only because of the advent of this codec and the market, but because of the shortage of HDCAM SR tapes due to Japan’s earthquake.
But even adding to your answer, not being able to define the form of ProRes you are working with in FCPX is one more major design flaw in the current state of FCPX.
-
Yep. That’s what I was hoping as well… and probably the whole industry. But if everyone moves away from FCP, it will be a much harder fight to get rid of tape. When you start convincing a company like ARRI about this.. it would eventually grow into others big profile companies and maybe even the networks.
