How to get FCP bins into Avid?
Posted by Casey Swircz on August 10, 2011 at 4:10 pmHere’s my question……
My boss wants to tranfer a project from fcp to avid. I understand that automatic duck will help out with getting sequences over but what about bins? Will I have to rebuild my logged bins in avid or is there another way to move my bins from fcp to avid without having to log/rename my clips again. I haven’t bought Automatic Duck yet but that seems to be the best option when going from fcp to avid.
Any information is greatly appreciated.

August 10, 2011 at 4:39 pmSebsky tools is a free utility that allows you to transfer the clips to Avid. Sequences need either Automatic Duck or BorisFX’s transfer utility, both purchased software.
Here is a link that is still active for downloading Sebsky Tools:

August 10, 2011 at 4:56 pmThanks! But I’m still going to have to put together all my bins from scratch once the ftg gets into Avid right? I guess I’m just looking to see if its even possible to move bins without having to redo all the work I already did in fcp.

August 10, 2011 at 5:13 pmSorry, you cannot move the project without effort. These are VERY different editing systems.
I though Sebsky’s Tools was gone. Glad to know they are still around.

August 10, 2011 at 5:15 pmYou would make a batch list of each of your bins in FCP, then use the sebsky tool to convert to ALE (Avid Log Exchange) which imports into Avid creating the same clips in their respective bins. The following is from their help file:
fcp2ale
fcp2ale converts batch lists exported from FCP into ALE Shot logs that can be imported in to Avid.
fcp2ale requires the following columns to be present in the FCP batch list you want to convert:
Name
Media Start
Media End
Tracks
Reel
Type
The following columns do not have to be present in the FCP batch list, but they will be translated if they are:fcp2ale reads batch lists from FCP 2, FCP 3 and FCP 4.
To convert an FCP batch list to an ALE shot log follow these steps:Export the batch list from FCP. Remember to include at least the required fields. You can either export a single bin or all the bins in a project. Refer to your FCP manual for further instructions.
In Sebsky Tools, choose fcp2ale, either by selecting menu item fcp2ale in the Tools menu, or by clicking the fcp2ale icon in the toolbar.
Select the FCP batch list. In the option below the file browser, you can choose to convert only Clips, Clips & Subclips or subclips only, to the new ALE shot log.Click Convert. Sebsky Tools will present a save panel for each bin in the FCP batch list and save the new ALE shot logs.

August 10, 2011 at 6:49 pmYou don’t need Sebsky Tools for this.
You can export your bins as FCP Batch Lists, import them into Cinema Tools, then export from there as ALE (Avid Log Exchange) from there.

August 11, 2011 at 4:36 pmActually you don’t need batch files either…if you think hard enough about your media, it becomes a bin automatically. 🙂
Thanks for the info. I had no idea.

August 11, 2011 at 4:43 pmActually…. if you really think hard enough, you see the finished piece in your head and there is no need to edit at all. 🙂

August 11, 2011 at 10:05 pmDoes this work with merged clips as well? If i could transfer all my merged synced work, it would be a godsend. Im tired of the constant crashing on my FCP because of the xdcam media.
