You limit your options with a slower card (we’re only talking about a few bucks here).

Export your file as a reference file, File/Export/QuickTime Movie (not Quick Time Conversion), and don’t select Make Self-Contained. The reference file is created pretty quickly. Use that reference file in Compressor.

Yes it’s true. Buy the FW800 card, they’re cheap. I use the LaCie, I think it was $50.

Good advice in the previous replies. Just to add: I’m editing more and more with my 1.5g PB. I bought the AJA IO LA specifically for that because I wanted the ability to capture on the road. All I would need is a deck or a camera that I could recored from. If you’re planning to finish editing on a desktop, it might be easier (and possibly cheaper) to digitize onto a FW drive from your desktop, then use those files on your laptop. We’ve been using the DV50 codec for BetaSP footage and it looks great. Maybe not quite the same as uncompressed, but very nice. DV50 also makes editing multiple streams of video easier on a PB. For drives, Walter already mentioned 2 possibilities. I bought a 2 drive FW case, put my own drives in it, and striped it. The performance matched what barefeats.com got in their tests of the G-Raid and the LaCie BDX. It also gave me more flexibility by allowing me to swap out drives, and saved me a bundle.

Not true. Read all the latest reviews and tests. Maxtors aren’t the drives they used to be. I’m not sure what the frame dropping problem here is, but don’t be claiming things that aren’t true.

Like, for example, if you use a blue-screen and they have blue eyes, make sure they don’t wear them that day. 🙂

You’re already sacrificing a lot by editing on a PB. Why not help it all you can? We bought our PB with 512MB of RAM and bought a 1gig stick, then another. I think it’s much faster.

Sure you can put a SATA drive in a FW case, but it needs to have a SATA interface for the drive, and FW outputs. Fwdepot.com and others make them. Don’t expect any kind of performance increase over IDE drives in a FW case though.

My suggestion is *don’t* use gaussian blur. It’s only the thin *horizontal* lines that flicker, not the vertical lines so why blur everything in all directions.
Try Motion Blur in Photoshop instead, set for 90 degrees (vertical only). It leaves all the horizontal sharpness, only affecting the vertical sharpness.

Actually Jeff, there are now 2.5″ 7,200 100 gig drives available to go in bus-powered FW cases. I know for sure that Seagate has one, and I think another company has come out with one.

I don’t know what your options are for editing away from a power source. I know some people make low-rez versions of their video which COULD be edited off the internal drive and then the re-capture the full-rez video when they’re back home again. I don’t know if that’s the only solution or if there are fast enough hard drives that can run off of battery power. I’m sure someone else will be along shortly to let us know.”
