Hi Matt,
To answer your question, after going through several months of trying to get our multiple HD production shows off the tricaster(file sizes anywhere from 30-60GB) and on to cable, my solution, after several suggestions, was to buy an external recorder. I went with the Atomos Samurai. It records my shows and converts them to prores 422 on the fly. I then take the recorder home to my mac based studio and create DVD’s for the clients right off the drive using FCP X. Now I’m seeing blazing fast edits and saving 4+ hours on authoring DVD’s.
It was painful using FCP X after a decade of cutting on the legacy versions of FCP, however, after painfully going through the motions (and complaining on many blogs) I must admit I was wrong, and FCP X has made me a convert. Honestly, anything that can save me several hours of editing at this point, is worth its weight in gold.
Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it.

Gerald,
I’m having the same experience. Different clients, but still needing SDE’s, and I’ve recently re-learned AVID, after 10 years of FCP, and took the time to complete the same edit in both programs and FCP X saved me about 4 hours, maybe more. That to me is worth everything, as I’m editing multiple hour-long HD shows weekly. I am, after a tantrum that almost cost me a computer, falling in love with the speed and simplicity of X. However, I also completely agree with Craig, as I really feel “professionally abandoned” by apple at times. I love apple, fcp and Color. But I also spent many years learning Apple’s Color program, and now there is no support. I have colleagues in the same studio who have similar experiences with Shake, and I wish I had all the time I spent learning those programs back, because Apple will simply not commit to the professional. Color was awesome, Shake was awesome, and now they are dead. We don’t see Davinci or Avid pulling their professional support. Please Apple, re-assure us, because this is your last chance from pros who have loved you for decades.
I’m loving FCP X and the time I’m saving is giving me my life back, and probably saving my relationship with my girlfriend:-) But now that I’ve made the commitment to start cutting my shows with X, I’ll be damned if I stay with Apple if they don’t start showing some loyalty to us professionals who first cut on their software and learned to type on the first Mac. Just my opinion.
It is nice to hear positive comments. I’m still mastering Avid, just in case Apple wants to completely pull professional apps. But in the meantime, I’m cutting on X and loving the fun I’m having again like the first time I edited in a professional bay.

December 23, 2011 at 7:33 pm in reply to: Having Major Problems with Cross Dissolves in FCPXKarl, I haven’t been able to fix it at all. I had to build some quick titles for one of our many radio shows that stream online, and by the time I had to deliver we all just had to live with it.
Watch just the opening of this and you’ll see the “pop” that I mean:
The popping does not happen on the timeline, it always plays smooth in the program…only after I export, and I’ve tried many different codecs, but it doesn’t help.

Hi Rafael,
Actually yes, you might be on to something, the file was color corrected before broadcast in a Tricaster 300 prior to import, then edited and slightly tweaked in FCP X, and I did use some of their presets such as lens flare and old film look then exported using: Share>Export Media>Current Settings. But I haven’t had any problems when exporting to proress 422.

Jared,
I had the same problem every time I exported using share>export media>current settings. I didn’t bring it up because no body else seemed to have the problem and I was using a trial version. Also, my video did not look like yours constantly, just at certain points, but the video was completely unusable. I got around this (and I’ve exported many projects with great results) by choosing prores 422 and then converting the video for the client via iskysoftly.
After exporting share>export>prores 422 the video plays perfectly.
This is the only way I got it to work. I hope this helps.

Santa Fe county outside of Cedar Crest, but that was a long time ago. Graduated from Manzano HS in 1991. God I miss the food! For red chili, if you ever get a chance, go to the Horseman’s Haven in Santa Fe…unbelievable. At least when I was a kid. I’ve been all over the world since then, and nothing beats New Mexican food, in my opinion.
Thanks again.

December 13, 2011 at 3:28 am in reply to: Having Major Problems with Cross Dissolves in FCPXThe only issue I have had was at the end of the dissolve it would “pop” for one frame. I built some titles for a recent show with 3 dissolves and each one popped at the end. If “popped” isn’t the right word, I guess I mean it wasn’t smooth and was jumpy for a frame or two.
Otherwise a few odd things have happened, but I chalk it up to version 1.0 and my inexperience.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Timothy,
I actually figured it out shortly after posting this. It was one of those 13hr edit days and my brain was mush. I’m used to doing HD projects and this was an SD project with a lot of problems with multiple formats, so I just needed to blur one image and I was cutting in FCP X for the first time.
Anyway, thanks again.
BTW, eat some green chili for me! Haven’t been home in quite some time.
Cheers.

December 6, 2011 at 11:49 pm in reply to: Switched to AVID want to move the attic off my SSDHi Cameron,
Yeah, I’m a little weary of changing my home folder I tried and my machine did some crazy things. I guess I don’t have much experience with that. This is my first SSD and I’ve always worked in FCP setting my scratch disks, etc to an external. But again, I don’t think its too much of a problem to have the Attic on the SSD.
If you’re on a mac the Attic is located: /Users/Shared/AvidMediaComposer
Thanks Cameron.
