January 15, 2014 at 3:30 am in reply to: Question about working on a MacPro and Macbook Pro with the same ProjectAlso — The reason I was thinking now that I should figure out this back and forth, is that currently I’m on my Macbook Pro and have some of the Events that I’m working with, and want them all to exist in the same Library to represent this overall project, but am wondering what sort of hassle that is going to create when I’m back at my main machine and am trying to consolidate, cleanup, and update everything within the ‘master’ project.

I would love it if I could figure that out.
The few “out of the norm” things that my timelines have on them, as opposed to perhaps the standard out of the box user, is that most of the clips have a CoreMelt LockNLoad Stabilize filter on them, and also there is an Adjustment Layer stretched across the whole timeline with a global Color Correction. There is also a Grain stock footage element that has been looped over and over and rendered down in a compound clip laid across the top, and a PNG 2.35 Matte Image with Alpha for a Global 2.35 Matte.
I’m assuming that it has something to do with the fact that the Render Data is somehow residing with the CLIP, and since I have Adjustment Layer style “clips” overtop of them, there is something that isn’t connecting back up.

This points to another issue that I have yet to be able to solve.
Every time I launch the program when it hasn’t been opened, I no longer have any of the render files. I know they’re still there, because they are still taking up space in the event and project folders, but in my timeline the dreaded orange bar of dropped frame doom and darkness hovers ever present.
This is very frustrating when I am trying to show something to a client, and I didn’t have it opened in FCPX, ie: I have it hidden via Event Manager because navigation between so many Projects is insanely slow. —So, therefore FCPX has to relaunch the app, and voila, now all my rendered down projects are back to orange, and I try and play them down and have the frustration of either playing a timeline that drops frame across cuts or other heavier clips, or I have to ask them to just wait and waste time on their cell phones while I re-render what we just rendered.
This thing alone is the biggest reason why FCPX is still not ready at all for the client room, unfortunately. It makes me sad too, because as far as app user experience, I far prefer FCPX to any other editor…

October 24, 2013 at 8:13 pm in reply to: Is it possible to split clips with the Range Selection tool? The reason I’m doing it this way is because all of my selects and organization is taking place inside the timeline. I’m not doing any of the organizational work in the event browser. Everything is pulled into the timeline, and then trimmed DOWN from there, similar to taking a block of stone and chipping away at it. That is why it’s important that I see at a glance where my useable material is. I want to go through and do the reductive work ONCE, and then never have to step into a clip again to see what I’ve got. I can simply hit play on my timeline and I’ve got instant dailies/selects one after another.
I’ve attached an image so you can see what I’m talking about. As you can see from the gaps in the connected clip, that is where I DON’T have a useable shot from one angle, but can seen from the clip below it that I DO have it in the other angle.
Just like anything in post production, or in art for that matter, there are many ways to skin a cat, and this happens to be the best way to skin it given my material and the ultimate project that it is. Just like there is no one way to hold a paint brush to get the stroke you want. FCPX luckily gives us as artists several ways to accomplish our goals, so there is no one right way, or is there is no ‘use it as FCPX, not as a traditional NLE.’ the point is just, use it to cut footage.
I appreciate the concern, but it does become tiresome at times when posting on this forum about simple questions and then having someone say “I don’t understand why you’re doing your workflow that way. Do it this way.”
It’s like walking into a store and asking where the wetsuits are and then having the store owner say “I don’t understand why you’re surfing. Why aren’t you snowboarding?”

October 24, 2013 at 6:18 pm in reply to: Is it possible to split clips with the Range Selection tool?I know all about the multicam system, and set up everything that way at first.
The reason I want to work this way is because I have gone through and done the work of clearing out everything that is NOT a useable piece from a shot. Now in my timeline I have ONLY the useable ingredients I have, instead of re-watching thru my multicam clip and re-seeing all of the camera bumps and other things I don’t want to see any more.
I’m not trying to make FCPX work like another NLE. I’m making it work like FCPX, except THE WAY I NEED GIVEN MY PROJECT.
I always find it interesting on this forum how many times you get the obligatory “why are you doing it that way?” when you ask about something totally different…. Believe it or not I actually know what I’m doing…

October 23, 2013 at 10:45 pm in reply to: Is it possible to split clips with the Range Selection tool?Yeah, that’s what I’ve been doing. Was just hoping to use the range selection as that would make a quick drag select and split a nice, smooth, single gestural move where as with the blade tool it becomes a several click, clunky operation.

It seems to be a related issue to the App not having focus. If I start a Render Selection and then click away from FCPX the render will stop, and then it will start to exhibit that strange render behavior. I was working on the same section I mentioned earlier, and did a render selection without clicking away from the app, and just letting it render, and it got through it all the way. It seems to be some kind of issue related to the way that FCPX is handing off back and forth the priority of the system resources.

I haven’t upgraded yet, but that’s interesting. I was wondering about that behavior as well.
Will try deleting the preferences again, though I did that 2 days ago for another bit of weirdness I was noticing.
Hoping the FCPX update will fix a lot of these finicky little bugs.. Really really loving the program….when it works.

This is a brand new “project” (sequence) with everything copy/pasted into it.
I’ve had it exhibit this behavior in all kinds of different “projects”. It seems that regardless of my selection, it will just render one clip and then stop. Forcing me to hit Ctrl-R for every clip. Kinda ridiculous.

It’s about the work, it’s not about the tools. Sometimes the tools are just unfortunately designed.
The client’s don’t get the “what are we paying for” feeling, because they are paying for the work that I do, not for the PCI cards that are sitting in my tower.
Apple is designed for the artist, so when there are little places here and there that are not supportive of an elegant and creative design within the application, like having to look at a bunch of visual clutter when it would feel better not to. And not require an end user an additional piece of hardware to do so. That mentality is exactly the opposite of everything that Steve Job’s was doing with Apple.
