I did some research and found an article that mentions that it’s common practice, doesn’t degrade the file, and makes editing a bit smoother. It doesn’t suggest at all that it will uncompress h264, I’m not saying that. Again, I’m a simple man trying to make things easier for myself.

Is that enough information for you regarding the codec?

Hey Jeff. My second HDD is internal, a Seagate 3.5″ 7200 RPM 500gig Barracuda, which I pulled out of an old computer and, yes, I’ve heard they break down, but it’ll do for now.

I wasn’t hell bent on getting a z800. Someone here told me I could save a lot of money by getting a z800 instead of the z820 I originally asked about. He paid about $400 for his but after all the additions he made to it the cost must have been over a grand and I don’t want to spend that much since, as you realize, I’m just a hack. I’d like fast response times but not so much that I’d pay $1,200 or so.

I was just going to post here with specs on a Dell I found on Ebay. Let me know if these are good. I have the high bid but there are still 6 days left and 35 previous bids so I’ll probably lose, but let me know if these specs are good, in your opinion.

Thanks, guys! I do have some reservations however, since I myself have an i5 dual core, and just recently added a second HDD, but this is the system I’m trying to get out of since it bogs down and all. Now, having said that, could it be that I only have 12gigs of RAM, and my graphics card is one of those built in Intel 3D graphics cards?

I will definitely look into the Dell you suggested. Thanks again for your input and thanks to Jon for confirming his advice.

Oh well, at least we’re less than 2 months away from the latest upgrades. I saw a video from Adobe on the newest features in Premiere Pro, Audition and AME and if they add fixing this audio bug it’s gonna be sweet.

Hey Duke, depends on what and how you are rendering. Some effects, (if any) can be quite render-intensive. Is the added drive a 7200 rpm drive? SATA I, II, III? Having added that drive, how are you dividing up tasks with the drives?

Yeah, I have no idea what the deal is with those workstations. If that was how they’re really supposed to perform HP would have been out of business years ago. Something’s not right with the boxes this seller has sent me. Anyway…

As I said, I’ve already rendered the file about 5 times (after tweaks) to the same HDD that my OS and software is on. Each time it took about 35-40 minutes. I just pulled this HDD from an old machine and put it in my current consumer level PC. To test it I rendered that same video again, this time to the second HDD.

The only effects is color correction and Primatte Keyer. I went out to lunch and when I got back an hour later, the render was still only 10% done and the estimated completion time had gone up to 8 hours. For a 2 minute video. Yes, it’s a 7200 rpm SATA drive. I don’t know if it’s I, II or III. Given that I pulled it from a Gateway I’m gonna guess whatever the cheapest drive is. I know it’s a Barracuda, 500 gig drive.

Un-freakin’-believable. This one was worse than the other one! At one point, while I wasn’t even touching it, it went into chkdsk mode, took 20 minutes to check the hard drive for errors, then went into reboot and stayed in reboot for another 30 minutes! Took 194 minutes to install Premiere Pro! Then, when I had it finally running, I would click on a dropdown, and nothing would happen for like 15 seconds, then it would drop down, I’d click on my choice, and it wouldn’t change for 10 seconds! Plus it already had Chrome installed (!?!), but it was an outdated version which wouldn’t let me update it. And when I turned it on it would always try to boot from the optical drive first.

Needless to say it’s going back. I’m done with workstations. I know they’re NOT supposed to be this bad, but I’m just soured on the whole thing. I’ll just have to find ways to put my rendering times too good use.

On the bright side you won’t have to deal with my inane problems anymore.
