Just wanted to point out the keystroke Ctrl+M just to exporting. Keystroke are an editors best friend!

I don’t believe so. I was under the understanding that AE deinterlaces when importing the project into a new comp.

  • 1. why do they only want and require “.F4V”, not .MOV files?
As you’ve stated lower in your post, F4V is the flash wrapper for the H.264 codec, as .MOV is the quicktime wrapper for H.264. Same codec as heart, different wrapper for compatibility with 2 different players. So to directly answer this question, it’s because they want to use the video within the flash player and not quicktime.

    2. so is this because of the way it is built out in Flash or how it is coded then?
    See above.

    3. is this because they are PC people, not ‘mac’ people, trying to avoid Apple video of any sort in Flash?
    Nope.

    4. Or they have an architecture that they want to keep, and they do not want to modify it with new media file extensions?
Bingo. This would be my guess. If there system is setup to deliver flash, they’re going to stick with it.

    5. We gave them some H.264 files, .movs, and they said “they didn’t work”, whatever that means.
.Mov wrapper not compatible in Adobe Flash Player.

6.they want us to match the file size for the new file encoded.
I’m assuming you mean resolution? If they mean physical (even though it’s digital) size, h.264 should result in less space (megabytes).

To answer the resolution problem, it’ll take some playing around to find out what works best with what you’ve got but some tips would be to
    a. scale the video resolution down proportionally (resulting in black bars) OR
    b. crop out the sides of the video with the HD footage if it can be.

Hopefully this helps. By the way, you’re doing a great job in asking questions. I’ve seen other posts of yours and you’re definitely milking the community for all it’s worth. It’s why we’re all here! To tell other beggars where bread can be found.

As far as FLV and F4V, F4V is flash video using the .H264 codec applied. At this point, I would use F4V because of market saturation of Flash 9 v3 (which is required to play the F4V files) is over 97% in world wide mature market. Also F4V gives you a better result as compared to FLV for majority of things. Now, on the other hand, if your video will be using the alpha channel, you’re stuck using FLV. For my line of work I’m stuck using FLV (need the alpha). Hope this helps!

Hey guys, I know somewhere on Creative Cow there is a post that has this same video but it also has one of clowns doing a robbery. That video is also freeze frame, but for the life of me I can’t find it here or on youtube. Could anyone point me in the right direction 🙂

Never mind, I found it. It ended up being over at video copilot. My bad. For viewing pleasure…

I was also wondering if it would be best for play to control it via the ethernet. I would think that using the computer to control the play back is easier than it is be by pressing the buttons on the ki-pro. Same with naming the clips.

Ki-Pro. It’s what we’re going to be using. Creates a great workflow for what we do.

Hey Mark, amazing information. One last question I guess. As far as getting some flo’s, would you use them or use Tota’s with some diffuser frame? As far as shipping goes, I really don’t know how fragile flo’s are, but we use military grade cases and pack tightly. But if you think flo’s are going to be a problem shipping, then I’ll probably steer clear.

Yes it’s going to be mobile, sorry for not making that clear. We ship UPS/Fedex and in a crate wherever the shoot location is. I’d really like to get the Kino’s but again, I’m not sure how much lighting is enough with their products. I’ve emailed a sales associate for my region so hopefully I’ll be able to get an idea from them. I really do appreciate any and all feedback and input from you guys.

Hmm.. you’ve definitely given me some more things to think through. I’ve got some questions of what you’ve said, pardon my ignorance but when you say “between 60 and 80 IRE units on the scope, or a stop lower than your talent”. What kind of scope can I use without costing an arm or a leg? Also I’m assuming you mean F-Stop correct? How would I achieve that differentiation between the background and talent? As you can tell I’m very new to this and have kind have been thrown into this blindly.

Also, I’ve taken a further look at Kino Flo’s and for a 10×16 screen could I be ok getting a system like the Kino Flo Single System Two Light Fluorescent Kit (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/434631-REG/Kino_Flo_KIT_140X_Single_System_Two_Light.html#specifications)? What confuses me is how much light do I need? I see these 4 bank systems and I guess I have not idea how much I actually need?
