In the browser, right-click on the synced clip and select ‘Open Clip’. That will put you -inside- the synced clip and you’ll be able to stabilize it there. You may need to replace the cuts that are already in your project timeline to reflect the change, however.

I experienced something similar once, early on while I was learning to use FCPX – and what I eventually discovered is that I’d got confused about something important.

I had selected a clip in the browser, right-clicked, and selected ‘Open in Timeline’. And then went about editing from there… so all of my edits were inside that one clip, instead of in a Project timeline.

What I came to realize is that you can open individual clips and modify them, and I had put a day’s worth of work into that one clip in the browser. So I’d recommend turning on the filmstrip view in the browser and look for a clip that’s got your real timeline in there. If you find it, you can simply copy out the stuff that shouldn’t be there and paste it into a new project. Don’t forget to delete the stuff that isn’t the clip from the clip… ;^)

There is also an issue with Sierra and AFP when writing to older Synology NAS devices, to the point that you can’t save an open file to the device. File transfers work fine though. I think it’s got something to do with auto-save / versioning.

If you’re running a Synology NAS that cannot be upgraded to DSM 6.x, you’ll need to use SMB – and since it’s an older DSM version, that is also problematic… much slower networking primarily. My 1GbE connection went from full saturation over AFP down to about 250 Mbps with SMB.

Hey Jerry,

That is a direct result of the 10.3 update, where the interface changed substantially. There are ways to change which panes are open and their sizing, but no way to move the positions of the buttons.

Also keep in mind that many of the older tutorials, while quite useful conceptually, are working with older versions of the software. FCPX has undergone major changes at every point release, so try to focus on the later tutorials for ‘how-to’ bits.

I switched from FC7 about 6 months after initial release. There have been challenges, but it’s just so damn much fun to edit that I can’t imagine using anything else. Big fan of Ripple Training – check their blog. Keep learning!

The problem is that in FCPX, a matte _is_ an effect… applied directly to a clip, and not a solid layer in and of itself. Unless you’re talking about creating a static image mask in Photoshop or similar, but I don’t think Jerry was asking that question.

Andy described a method whereby you create a dummy text generator, which you can then place in the timeline like any other clip, apply effects to it, and which will in turn affect the clip directly beneath it. That’s why he called it an adjustment layer – because that’s how it behaves in this context.

That’s what Andy was describing with the adjustment layer… if you simply apply a matte effect to the clip itself, you don’t get the same type of interaction.

It would be fairly easy to build this effect in Motion, if I understand the question – it sounds like a simple drop zone with sizing / positioning parameters published.

The file you posted is a Windows Media Audio file (red flag!), and contains about 2.5 minutes of conversation with no dropout. I don’t know of any recorders that are native .wma, so I’m assuming the audio was converted – which makes troubleshooting the file impossible.

Do you have the original media from your recorder?
