What you’ve got there appears to be a Kernel Panic.

It could be software OR hardware related. Sometimes a failing component (motherboard / RAM / GPU / etc.) can cause this to happen, even with new hardware. Exporting video can stress your system more than other operations, and expose problems you wouldn’t see otherwise.

It could also be that you’ve run out of space on your boot drive and the export is choking the OS.

In your Applications / Utilities folder, there is an app named Console. If you have a bit of tech background you may be able to get an idea where the problem is originating by checking the Panic log.

No, AAT is audio project conversion only… no video, nothing to do with FCP directly. Would be cool though.

I’ve been using FCPX for new projects for 5+ years, and have migrated several projects from FCP 7 and PPro via XML when possible. However, I’ve got 10 prior years of FCP Legacy projects (hundreds of them, in fact) that *probably* won’t ever need to be opened again. Probably. Just in case, I keep a 2011 cheesegrater frozen at 10.9.x with the entire legacy suite. Had to crack open a 2004 event edit last week.

A simple converter/exporter for these old files would allow me to replace that old tower without worry. It just isn’t practical to go back and open all of those projects to export XML.

Hi Kristian,

Your pictures aren’t named correctly. Each image must have the same prefix followed by a 3-digit number. Start with 001 and count up – in the tutorial, he’s using face001, face002, face003, etc. You could use whatever, but they all need to match, and the 3 digit number is required.

First, delete the images from your project. Then, in the Finder, rename the photos correctly.

When you get back into Motion, click the ‘Import’ button (or File -> Import…) and locate your first picture (photo001). Once the Import window is open, click the Options button in the lower left corner – you’ll see the Image Sequence checkbox appear, but greyed out.

After you select your first numbered picture, you can click the Image Sequence checkbox and then finish importing the sequence.

Once you’ve done that, the rest of the tutorial will work as presented.

You may not need to crop or scale if your project has the correct output dimensions – select the clip, and in the Inspector set Spatial Conform to ‘None’. Then reposition your clip accordingly.

You can change this setting in the browser or the timeline. Keep in mind that changing the setting in the browser will not affect clips that are already in the timeline.

Not necessarily. You can disable background rendering, and many do (myself included). Even with multiple formats / frame rates, I don’t need or want to render everything during edit. There are cases where I’ll render a small section if I’m retiming with Optical Flow or if I’ve just got too many layers stacked up to play smoothly. For me, those instances are infrequent. More often with compressed 4K footage than anything.

Alternatively, in the browser:
1. right-click on the clip, select ‘Open Clip’
2. in the clip’s timeline, select the audio track and from the ‘Clip’ menu, select Break Apart Clip Items
3. adjust the track that’s out of sync

Not sure if this would ripple to previously-used instances (guessing not), but it’s another avenue to explore.
