William,
That is the single most interesting and useful tip I have had in a long time!
I am only 6 weeks into MC and Boris has always been a puzzling programme to learn.
Your “Add Edit” button tip was a revelation to me…….Thank you very much.

Joe, Thank you for your input.
Before I had seen your reply I made a new attempt at getting it to work.
I am hapy to say I succeeded!!!For anyone else who runs into this problem, here is what I did.
I added the BorisFX (AVX2.0) effect to the clip on MC’s timeline.
Clicked on “Launch user interface” in the Effect Editor to get to BorisFX.Made my route in BorisFX. (So far same as I had tried before)
BUT then…….
I added a “Gradient Media” track above the reveal track.
I adjusted the Gradient mask so that the alpha channel was zero.
I made it an animated gradient for the length of my “reveal” effect.
Hit “Apply” and was back in MC.
I rendered the track on the timeline and —- Hey Presto! it worked. [:O]Why it didn’t work without the Gradient mask I have no idea……. but I am happy to have solved that one.
[:D]
Hope this can help anyone else who has met this problem,
Regards,
Douglas

Alan,
I was unable to reproduce the problem!
Hopefully it was just the result of a tired computer….. or, more likely, a tired computer operator.
If it resurfaces I will try and document the steps more precisely.

Thanks for the reply,
I have version 3.0.3 18Dec 2007 installed.I will not have time until tomorrow to do some more tests.
What details would you like about the project?
I will make a few screen shots too.Regards,

Yet again I seem to be answering my own question…..
Am I correct in assuming I must have the top layer active when I save the project?
It looks like I had layer 0 active….and got only layer 0 when I renedered……. but if I have layer 4 active and on top … then all layers from 4 down are present when rendering.

Replying to myself!
After studying Elvis Deane’s Guide to ParticuleIllusion 3 – Offset chapter. I got things figured out.
But now I found a new problem?
Making the offsets for the different explosions I had to use Layers (4 in all).
When rendering the final sequence I only get Layer 0 visible in the rendered avi.
What is the next basic thing I am missing? How do you get all layers to render together?
Sorry for such basic and simple questions.

Peter,
My patience is fine.
No pressure from here.
Today is the 1 month anniversary of the reporting of the problem…..
If there is any progress report about the problem, that would be a nice way of breaking up the waiting time.

I appreciate the time and effort you are putting in trying to get to the bottom of this issue.I can add another video card to the list that is showing this problems. Here is an extract from a message a UK friend of mine posted elsewhere:
Douglas, I have just tried the write-on / reveal starting from within Liquid. Everything works fine in Boris 9.1 but when the apply button is clicked and the full render in AL is complete the effect does not change at all. The effect is stuck at a random position through the reveal, I have tried several times.
I am using ATI X800 graphics card.Clarification: depending on where your timeline is positioned in Boris when you hit the Apply button will determine the position of the reveal.

I have Boris 9.1.5.070615
I have difficulty navigating Boris site and finding latest versions etc.
What is the latest version number?I tried deleting the .ini file , but that did not help.
Now I have tried Boris with 3 different systems and Liquid.
3 different video cards.
In all cases I can go from the Liquid timeline to Edit BorisFX… I can make the effect. Playback the finished effect in Boris.
But when I hit the “Apply” button – The rendered result has only one frame of the effect applied to the whole clip. In other words no animation. On a system with an older AGP Radeon card I get no error message on starting Boris.
On a system with an NVidia PCie GForce 7900GS I get an error message about open GL and that the system video card driver is not supported by Boris!
On the 3rd system with an ASUS PCie 2900XT card I get the message that the card is not supported.I find it most annoying that Boris has problems with 3 different cards and their drivers.
I did find a download called OGL off….. or something.
at one point is says: “In its place put in the downloaded OGL Off BorisFX9.1.ini file (after un-zipping it)”
Where is the zipped OGL.ini file?
Is it in the tutorial on that page?
I downloaded the Tutorial.zip, but on trying to unxip I got a CRC error!!!!Peter, I have had great hopes for Boris…. but the more I get involved the less and less I like it, its idiosyncrasies and the unintuitive Boris site…. that sends you round in circles ……
Hope you can change my attitude….
