For those of us “also rans” that can’t make it to Vegas this year…… Is there any chance the event will be streamed?

    Timothy,
The camera’s that you use do affect the quality of work, but having owned both the 150 and 170, I can recommend both for local broadcast work. If in the future, your able to build up to doing work for the major national and international networks, (Discovery, Learning Channel, the BBC etc.) you will have to meet certain standards including acceptable camera lists which must be followed.

I would wait until after next week to make up your mind, because of NAB is next week (The National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas,) There may be some major announcements about new cameras from the major manufacturers. This could affect you in two ways: new models could drive the current cameras down in price, and new technology could mean a better camera for a lower price. I personally would like to see prosumer genre camera’s that shoot ProRes (the editing codec of choice for FCP) without the need of an external box.

At any rate the HMC-150 and the HPX-170 are both decent choices for local broadcast work

Is there any difference between the way they are formatted? Most specifically are 2 of them journaled and the other 2 un-journaled? Highlight the drive, right or cntl click click on “Get Info” and look at the Format. In theory it should say “Mac OS Extended” not “Mac OS Extended Journaled”. Some of the smart people on this forum maintain that journaling the drives causes the drives to be slower. I have never tested that, but my scratch disk are not journaled, my P2 backup drives are.

  • Do you have a need for an external video monitor? With the web as your final destination, I would think not. So why don’t you look a re-furbished 27″ imac? The top end models have quads, and you could get up to 16 gigs of RAM in them…. Plus you would get a monitor. A lot of people here on the Cow use them as solid “editing” machines.

Wouldn’t the litmus test be a 64 bit version? If they came out with just a 32 bit feature / codec support update that would be the writing on the wall that it was time to jump ship. But if it is 64 bit it would have to be a total rewrite which would mean they intend to support the suite…..

I don’t want to take this thread off on a tangent but…. when I bought my MacPro I ordered a 8 gig Ram upgrade from Crucial. So now I have 2 sticks of 1gig that came with the machine, and I have 2 sticks of 4 gig that came from Crucial…… Then machine is not useless as it is, but according to everything I read on the Cow, the only way I can have an optimal Ram setup, is to buy another set of (2) 4GB sticks. Is that correct? 2008 MacPro 8 core.

    Thoma,
This might be a shot in the dark, but the last Pro Apps (6.1 ) update broke DVD Studio Pro for some and Final Cut for others. Consider this: https://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/mac_os_x_10.6.6_breaking_final_cut_studio.html
They also have a solution to the issue.

    Thomas,
If you have a spare firewire drive laying, around copy the SSD to it, disconnect the SSD, boot from the the firewire drive and see if the problem persists. I have seen some vague references on the web about some SSD giving less than desirable performance. If the problem follows to the Firewire drive, I would reconnect the SSD and do a total install from the OS up to ferret out any file that may have been corrupted. If the problem does not show up on the firewire drive, I would suspect a bad SSD, but I know so little about them, I wouldn’t know what to say at that point.

    Jeremy,
Thomas is trying to use his latest generation iMac, as a great little editing machine. The newest machines have the connections for a SSD and a standard internal esata hard drive. This allows an editor to load the OS and Apps on the SSD and then have a huge 2 or 3TB internal drive just for media! This also allows for the use of a AJA iohd off the firewire port. It is a great concept I hope Thomas gets it working.
