Mr. Clifton is right in that a lot more can go wrong with video tape than with solid state recording. I’ve never had a corrupt clip or been unable to transfer a clip from any of my Sony SxS Pro cards. To be fair, I’ll hazard a guess that some of you have recorded more clips than I have but still………
I also think it’s important to reformat the cards on a regular basis to keep the possibility of directory errors to a minimum. I don’t mean reformat every time but perhaps every 4th or 5th time you empty the cards do a reformat instead of simply deleting clips.
And here’s another thought for everyone’s consideration:
Not too long ago my wife took a still camera refresher course at a local college. Her instructor cautioned everyone against the practice of deleting an unwanted picture from the memory card, saying that he’s seen ghosting of the previous image underneath the new image when the camera takes another shot and it ends up in the same spot as the deleted one. He said to leave the unwanted image as is and reformat the entire card after the images have been transferred to computer. I hadn’t heard of this before and now I’m wondering if the same rules should apply to video as well.

No, you’re right. A 1080 image will look sharper on a true 1080 monitor than a blown up 720 image will.

You can under-crank in 1080 but not over-crank.

There are 2 shooting formats that will give you the best temporal resolution:
1080i 60 – 2 interlaced flields per frame
720p 60 – 2 complete pictures per frameAnything else is a compromise between increased motion blur and the cinematic ‘look’. You choose what’s more important for the project. if you have your heart set on shooting 24p make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons. Is your intent to sell this to someone afterwards? Do you have a buyer already? If so do they know you’re going to shoot it in 24p?
The only way to reduce motion blur in 24p is to increase shutter speed/angle. Again, this is also a compromise because if you go too wild on the shutter you’re going to get into the stuttery ‘Private Ryan’ look.
You need to get out there and shoot some test clips with the same sort of subject matter that the real project will be comprised of. See what shooting format and camera settings get the result you’ll be happy with.

Depending on who you talk to the Anton Bauer QR-EX3 mount and one Dionic 90 battery plus charger comes in between $1500.00 and $1700.00 CDN funds. Even though the Anton Bauer solution is probably the best I went with 3 BP-U60 batteries instead because of price.

Perhaps you could contact the company that shoots the Survivor television series. They own 16 of the PDW-F700 cameras and might be willing to jump on your bandwagon.

The only other battery company I would trust is something from Anton Bauer. I’ll be comparing prices later today to determine if:
1. Buying the Anton Bauer QR EX3 Gold mount and two (2) Dionic 90 batteries is smarter than:
2. Buying three (3) Sony BP-U60 batteries.
The Anton Bauer Dionic 90’s are good for around 6 or so hours (I think). I’ll also ask my broadcast supplier about alternate battery recommendations as well.

He probably didn’t know, since Sony only very recently announced the price reduction. I talked to my own Sony broadcast supply person this afternoon and he didn’t know much about the price drop, either. He thought it was still just a rumor and he certainly didn’t know that places like B&H Photo had already dropped their prices.
I guess I’m not all that bright either, Kevin. We’ll both keep each other company in the “Not-So-Smart” penalty box.

As a footnote, Sony has just reduced the price of the 32 Gig SxS Pro cards by roughly 40%. B&H Photo has already dropped their online price to $999.99.
Sony also announced the introduction of a 240 Gbyte XDCAM EX cartridge/storage device at about the same time. Called the PHX-MS240 and has dual USB and eSATA computer connections. That’s about all I know about it.
