You’re right, David. Compressor 1 doesn’t do interleaved audio. I forgot that Mark wanted that as part of the solution. I stand dejected.

The first version of Compressor will work fine. Hopefully Compressor also came to you with the companion program known as A.Pack. This is the program you use to compress your .aif audio files in to .ac3 (Dolby Digital). If you get stuck with anything I can send you a workflow sheet. With Compressor 2 the audio compressing program is now part of Compressor.

I have 3 LaCie FW drives, the smallest being a 250 gig, all running on a DP G4 800 without any problems at all. I would suspect you’d be in the same boat with your G4. As far as intenal ATA drives go, I think that’s where you’d run into problems with the G4 not seeing any more on those drives than 128 gigs because of the 32bit addressing. At least that’s how i’ve come to understand it.

I have absolutely no experience with capture cards, but does your Decklink use software of any kind, Chris? If so, does it use a set of preference files? Just wondering if you’ve trashed those, too.

Thanks Walter. Yes, I know about Crucial but right now I’m a little leary about cross-border shopping because of the high shipping costs associated with that. We tried to order Quickbooks for Mac from the USA and they were going to charge us 75 bucks American just for shipping. They said they could only ship by air freight and that’s because of new rules, etc. In total we were looking at almost $600.00 Canadian for a program worth $199.00 Amercian for the Windows version.
But guess what? When we booted up the new G5 a couple weeks ago we discovered Quick Books Pro on it. Not a demo. Not a time limited version but the real deal.
There IS a god.

You might want to have a look at the Sennheiser EW100 series wireless mic system.

This is not the least expensive system, nor is it the most espensive, but it will do the job for you. You may experience tranmission dropouts and interference problems with cheap systems (depending on how far away you are from the person wearing the mic and transmitter), but I’ve used this system for almost 3 years now and have never had a problem. With the cheaper systems you might be limited to only one channel but with the Sennheiser you can change channels if you experience interference from something else close by that’s transmitting on the same frequencey.
If you want to have wireless mics on more than one person at the same time you’ll have to buy two systems and plug them both into your XL1. If you’re shooting outside you’ll need to buy or make a small windscreen for the mic, as even a slight breeze will cause rumbling with the wirelss mic and will ruin your audio.
Of course, there are other wireless mic systems out there but this is my recommendation because of the quality and trouble free audio I’m getting with my system.

At least you have the option of being able to get to an Apple Store. Up here in the great white north they’re non-existant and the Mac place I deal with locally leaves much to be desired. When I phoned them to find out about G5’s they said they hadn’t seen any for over a month and weren’t expecting any in for another month at least. They also assured me that no one else in the area had any, either. But when I phoned a drug store chain that have small Apple display areas in the back of their stores (in amongst the substantial Windows stuff) and made some inquiries, they told me their inventory showed 13 G5 2.7’s in their system. I bought one.
I’m still waiting for the local Mac store to phone me back regarding RAM. Three weeks ago they said they were expecting a shipment due to arrive in a week and would phone me the minute it came in.
