Yes, the Panny Master series will cost more money. Sony also makes a Master series that are similar in quality to the Panasonic tapes.
Hits – dropouts – tiling – all mean the same thing. Once you’ve decided on what brand of tape, you should stay with that brand and only change after you’ve sent your camera in for a professional cleaning. This is because there are basically two types of tape: dry lubricated and wet lubricated. Mixing the two types without getting the cleaning done first is inviting tape recording problems such as dropouts, etc. It doesn’t matter which type you choose, but when you do stay with that choice.
When you first put a new tape into your camera, fast forward to the end and rewind to the beginning. This accopmlishes 2 things: it pre-tentions the tape against the recording drum and also helps to toss out any microscopic bits of debris that sometimes get lodged in the tiny grooves of the heads. This practice will help to keep tape dropouts to a minimum.
And don’t use a head cleaning cassette. They are very abrasive and will wear out your heads prematurely.

Yes, I’m interested. I wasn’t aware that you were using QT7. That is only supposed to work properly with Tiger. Since you’re still using Panther I’d strongly suggest you go back to QT6.5.2. There’s a post somewhere on here about a direct link to software at the Apple site allowing you to go back to QT6 from 7. It’ll de-install 7 and re-install 6. I’ll try and find it for you.

Go to the connections window. One of the connections on the left side will be: “track (insert number here) end jump” e.g. if you’re working with track 1 the connection will be: “track 1 end jump.” Just connect that to the menu (you’ve already created) of your choice on the right side of the connections window. Now, when the track gets to the end it will stop and you’ll be presented with the DVD menu screen you’ve connected it to. Bear in mind that I’ve never used anything other than DVDSP2, but I’m sure it’s very similar in more recent versions.

Forgot to ask if you’ve ever tried to capture to another hard drive other than the Medea. Your startup drive, for example, just to run a test.

I dunno, Nate. I’m out of ideas now. I would suggest you start a new thread outlining your problem so it’ll be front and centre up at the top of the FCP forum page and in everyone’s face. Um, and creat a link in your post to your original thread down here.
I can only relate to you what has worked for me in the past with similar problems, but I have no experience with Medea hard drives or your Cinewave capture card since I work only with Mini DV and firewire. I noticed that you’re a little short on RAM for your G4 but if everything’s been working fine up till now the RAM thing might not be so much of an issue.

Oh sorry, I missed that part. Reading too fast. Okay, I can tell you what I do for consistent audio. Export a self contained QT movie, video only. Then export audio using the “export audio to .aif” command, using 2 channel stereo. With my audio only file I import into A.Pack (not sure what version of DVDSP you’re using) for compression, and the important thing here is to make sure to set dialogue normalizatiion to -31 so that your audio file stays at the same attenuation level. In A.pack this level defaults to -27 every time. Once you’ve encoded the audio with A.Pack and your video with Compressor you can bring both files into DVDSP and drop them into a track. This workpath prodiuces no change in audio levels, for me, anyways.

Okay. The reason I asked about the FCP prefs is because I had the exact same issue and trashing the prefs cured the problem. FCP would capture to the hard drive, then at the end would tell me that I had bad TC and would delete the capture file. At the risk of sounding redudant (redundant, redundant)……double-check that you’ve trashed all the FCP prefs. Here’s a link on how to do it properly:

If you’re now saying: “enough already. I did all that” then you might try starting a brand new project and try capturing again, because you might have a corrupt project file or sequence file within that project. If that works you can capture away and then drag the files into your present project’s capture scratch folder and then just import them from within the browser. If you’ve already done all this then disregard my ramblings.
