Phillip, welcome to Creative Cow. If you leave the battery attached it will drain down to nothing in about 3 days even when the camera is off. No official response from Sony yet as to the reason.

No, you’re not going crazy. These issues are consistently happening to me as well, and I suspect it’s a bug in the Sony Transfer Tool software. There definitely needs to be an update soon. Until then, just delete the imported files from FCP’s browser window then find the actual clip files on your scratch disk and re-import them. After that the imported files will only be represented once in the browser window. But that doesn’t help the fact that some files aren’t being imported chronologically.
Although I haven’t tried it yet, perhaps trashing the Transfer Tool .plist may solve that because initially my Transfer Tool never used to screw up the clip order but now it does it to some extent every time.

I’m going to ask the Sony tech guy about the auto focus thing when I take my EX in for a back focus issue later this week (hopefully). If I get any additional info about how to use the EX auto focus to minimize the pumping I’ll be sure to post back.
Now I’m wondering that if the back focus is out of whack would that affect how the auto focus performs.

Your auto focus performance is typical of all EX cameras. Mine does the same thing. There are numerous posts and complaints all over the net about this very issue.

The Cavision piece is roughly 1/3 the price of the Chroziel box. If memory serves I paid around a grand for the 6×5.65 inch matte box which included the rods and base, the top flag and two side flags. The one I bought was initially for my XL2, so the EX matte box should be close in price.

It’ll be interesting to see how something like the new Zoe lens controller handles supper slow zoom, which is certainly within the controller’s capability. Then we’ll see if it’s a motor thing or not. As soon as I see what VariZoom has to offer I’ll make a decision on which controller to buy.

Same here. Rest assured that there are lots of EX1 owners in the same boat. This is a known issue and one that we all hope Sony is working on to resolve. You can certainly tell your local Sony rep but there is no quick fix that I know of at this time. All you can do right now is to keep the battery off the camera when you’re not using it.

There’s one from Cavision that’s designed specifically for the EX1. I don’t know about other brands as I haven’t done much research.

I don’t know if the indicator is spot or for the overall picture but I trust the zebra bars and my eyes. I use the dual zebra bars with one set at 80% for faces and the other set at 100% to see what would be blown out if I pressed the record button. The exposure latitude of this camera is such that there is still detail in highlights that are covered by the 100% bars. I think detail doesn’t disappear completely until the highlights hit 108% if that makes sense.

Not all 77mm filters are created equal. You need to find a thin version like the B&W clear glass protector filter. I’m using a Tamron piece that’s thin enough to easily get the stock hood back on the camera. It’s a UV filter though, and you may be looking for just clear glass. If the thin filters work with the stock hood I’m assuming that they’ll also work with a 3rd party matte box.
