January 23, 2013 at 11:33 pm in reply to: XDCAM EX3 MP4 files no preview in Finder (MAC)[Akmal Dahlan] “any ideas on how do I make the preview available in finder? Do i need some specific codec for it to show?”
You need the Sony XDCAM EX codecs present and active on your system in order to view the raw files directly from the SxS card’s BPAV folder. But even with the codecs you will not be able to preview the media at the finder level because the codecs aren’t active. The XDCAM EX codec is activated only from within an NLE or other program such as XDCAM Clip Browser, Sony XDCAM Transfer Tool, or the new Sony Browser program that combines both the Sony Clip Browser and Transfer programs. Of course the various NLE’s also support editing in the XDCAM EX format such as Premiere, FCP7 and X, Avid MC/Symphony etc. VLC Player is your best bet for previewing clips on any platform before working on them in an NLE.

The camera to computer connection works via the camera’s USB port. With the camera turned OFF connect it to your computer. Turn on the camera and in the viewfinder will be a message asking if you want to connect via USB. Choose YES and wait for the card icon to appear on your computer as an attached device, similar to a memory stick. If you have 2 cards active in the camera there will be 2 separate card icons available. If you don’t see any card/USB icons then you’re missing the Sony dsvice driver. If you do see the attached card icon(s) then start Clip Browser and navigate to your card icon from within the program to access your media.

[pam panther] “what can I do ?”
First of all, you could try to go through your colour correction process with different software to see if it the banding issue persists. If the different software returns a different or better result then the problem lies with your original editing software and not the media. I can’t suggest anything else for you to try without providing more information about your computer platform, OS version etc. I can’t even suggest alternate software because Scratch programing is available for both Mac and Windows.

You haven’t provided enough information to make an educated guess as to what the problem might be.
- Computer platform?
- Are you using USB to connect your camera to your computer?
- Are you using the camera to transfer media or just the cards?
- What is your operating system version?
- What is your Clip Browser version?
There could be several contributing factors. You’ve had this issue for 4 years and it’s still unsolved? That’s a long time between buying your EX3 and then being able to use your camera the way it was intended.

I’m not quite sure I understand your latest question but here goes.
The Sony Alpha SLT-A99 release date was at the beginning of September 2012. Development on the legacy Final Cut Pro 7 was halted at least 2 years before that. It may very well be that FCP doesn’t quite understand the Sony A99 naming convention or its AVCHD clip wrapper and this is where you start to see transfer errors in the meta-data.
Rather than going through FCP’s log and transfer, if you’re able to simply select all your converted A99 AVCHD files and import them into a FCP bin there shouldn’t be any problem doing it that way. Once you bring the transcoded files into FCP any meta-data that was successfully transferred along with the clips will stay with those clips throughout the editing process.

December 20, 2012 at 5:41 am in reply to: Problems converting XDCamEX .Mov files to MP4 for WebI get great results with the following work path:
- Normally I’ll work in a ProRes 422 timeline in FCP7.0.3, render and export using current settings.
- If your project is interlaced then use Compressor to convert to progressive. If you need to down-convert to something like 720p I’ll do this at the same time. Make sure frame controls are turned on. Keep in mind that anything that’s shot with the web in mind you should be using progressive anyway.
- Use QT Player 7 for your conversion to H.264 with an MP4 wrapper. Use the 2 pass VBR setting and even Vimeo and Youtube recommend an encoding bit rate of 5000kps, expecially if you’re leaving it at 1080. If you’ve converted to 720 first you can get away with 3000kps. But not 1080.
Cheers

November 30, 2012 at 5:22 am in reply to: Sony PMW-F3: unable to arm recording on Aja KI MiniSorry I couldn’t be more helpful. If I may make a supposition though; I would suspect it’s something with the F3 and not the Mini. I just did a test before my first reply and the exact same Mini settings I described to you just worked flawlessly for me. Pressing record on the EX3 starts the Mini recording as well.
Cheers,

November 30, 2012 at 4:52 am in reply to: Sony PMW-F3: unable to arm recording on Aja KI MiniI don’t have the F3 but I do have an EX1R and an EX3 and right now I have my Ki Pro Mini hooked up and running on the EX3. Perhaps some of the following preferences can be carried over to your setup.
My Ki Pro Mini has the latest firmware which is 4.1.0.31 (under the CONFIG menu).
Number 8.0 in the CONFIG menu should read:
TC in
SDI RP188Number 8.3 in the CONFIG menu should read:
Arm Recording
TC/REC KEYOn my EX3 under the TIMECODE Mode should be set to REC RUN. Make sure the SDI port on your F3 is active. I can’t think of anything else that you can check on your end but maybe this is enough.
Cheers,
Don

Bob,
Premiere Pro has had the capability to edit the XDCAM EX native files ever since v.5 came out. That’s at least 2 years ago. Just give your client the unaltered BPAV folders from each card on a device (hard drive, memory stick, etc.) that’s formatted in Windows NTFS and they can work with the files no problem.
