The Sony Transfer Tool has always been a universal binary app for both Power PC and Intel Macs. It’s the Sony Clip Browser that’s Intel only. People are using the Transfer Tool on their earlier machines so as long as you have the minimum OS and QT requirements you can give it a try. The Transfer Tool software is free anyway, so give it shot.

Hi Dave,
I’m not sure who you’re asking, but my response is no, I don’t have a Motion issue within FCP. The versions of FCP/Motion that was giving you trouble may well have been more recent that what I’m using at the moment, which is FCP 6.02 QT 7.3.1 and OS 10.4.11. There were certain bugs in recent updates that now seem to be resolved for most users.
For me it’s a “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” attitude.

FCP won’t let you overwrite a file that it’s using or aware of until you quit the program. Your choices are to either choose a different name for your 2nd export or drag the first export to the trash so it doesn’t get overwritten, or save the 2nd export to a different location, or quit FCP and trash your first movie, etc.

If your final output is for the web you can export right from the FCP timline using the: “Export Using Quicktime Conversion” command. You can set your output size there (such as 320×180 for 16:9) and then my suggesstion is to export using the H.264 codec for the web. A minute of video with a mono audio track should net you a file size starting around maybe 10 or so Mbytes. Your final file size is totally dependant on many factors (like frame size, bit rate, mono/stereo etc) during the conversion setup process but this should get you started on the right track.
FYI the H.264 codec is the one Apple uses for all their HD movie trailers.

I find it much easier to export a self contained QT movie from Motion and import that into FCP rather than doing the round tripping thing. I don’t have an issue doing any round tripping between FCP and Motion, or for that matter, any of the pro apps and FCP. I choose the above method just because that’s how I like to work.

There’s really no trick to swapping cards while you’re recording. Once the slot A card is full the camera automatically switches to the one in slot B. You pull out the full card in slot A and replace it with an empty one, and so on. I’ve only had the EX tell me twice that a card has to be restored. The first time was when I tried to reformat a card using my laptop as a test. The EX didn’t like the laptop’s FAT32 formatting and I had to restore. The 2nd time was after I emptied the card using the laptop and the EX wanted to do a restore on the card. There were no media files on those cards at the time. I’ve never had the “restore the card” message come up with media already on the card.
Just so you know you’re not doing anything wrong here’s how I get the media off the cards and emptied:
-put the full card into my Macbook Pro’s Express 34 slot.
-drag the BPAV folder from the card to my external G-RAID Mini.
-preview the clips from the copied BPAV folder with Sony’s Clip Browser.
-drag the BPAV folder on the card to the laptop’s trash can.
-empty the trash.
-put the card back into the cameraThat’s about it. If you’ve lost confidence in that particular card with the missing files, get it replaced. I’ve never lost a file so far, but with this new technology we’re all basically in the same boat in uncharted waters. If you want to keep using the problem card at least get the camera to reformat it before using it again.
Make sure the card is properly seated in the slot. I had a message on my EX once that it couldn’t access the card, so it knew there was a card in that slot. I took it out and pushed it back in…….firmly. It was all good after that.

USB transfer from your camera should be about 1.5 times faster than real time. Sometimes it’s even a little better than that.
Since you didn’t say what kind of hard drive you’re transferring to it’s kind of difficult to figure out where in the workflow path the slow down is occurring. Your other post in the Final Cut Pro forum is about your program/computer crashing when you scrub the timeline. This suggests to me that there’s an issue somewhere with your hard drive(s) not passing the information in and out fast enough.

If you hook up your EX to your computer via USB the cards from both slots should appear on the desk top. You should be able to highlight each card name and change it. Since you didn’t specify what computer platform you’re using this is just a general “try-this-and-see-if-it-works” idea.
