@Shane Ross FCP 6 uses XML v6. FCP 7 defaults to XML v5…NEWER. FCP 6 will not be able to read that format properly.
The Idea is good but not right explaned. FCP 6 uses XML v4 FCP 7 defaults to XML v5…NEWER. FCP 6 will not be able to read that format properly.

I had exatly the same problem. You need to open the XML File with TextEdit and change the entry at the beginning of the file:

After importing the XML File from Final Cut 7 it will report some uncritical errors and works ok.
