    Thanks Matthew.
Is it easy to upgrade the enterprise app and worker node? We had someone configure this for us originally. If it’s just like installing any other program then I rather install it myself.

    Makes sense.

February 23, 2011 at 5:38 pm in reply to: Terrablock upgrades or jump ship to MetaSAN?

[Nate Cooper] “Have you tried having the 5 editing suites mount the ingest volume as read only via Facilis. Then mount the same volume via the AFP share.”

Yes. Currently doing that now. Each suite has it’s own read/write volume, and they all read the tapeless volume (for editing). Logging is all done through CAT DV and the AFP share.

[Nate Cooper] “If you have a VAR that knows MetaSAN and your using a dedicated metadata controller, you should be good. Personally, I’d go that route, just because it’s more proven in the market right now.”

That’s what I need to know. Thanks!

February 23, 2011 at 4:07 am in reply to: Terrablock upgrades or jump ship to MetaSAN?

[Nate Cooper] “What exactly doesn’t work for your volume based workflow with CatDV? Have you talked to anyone at Squarebox about it? I’ve seen many users be very happy with CatDV in volume locking SANs.”

    Thanks Nate.
We have an ingest station, suites, and producer macbooks.
The ingest station has it’s own read/write volume. All P2, SxS, and CF cards are copied to a RAW folder on the ingest volume, then converted to Quicktime. The ingest volume is shared out over the network and the producers and prediators can log from their own desks in CAT DV (5 users total). The new file names are updated in finder.

The producers can read from the shared network volume and make rough cuts in FCP. As you can imagine, performance varies. Everyone could take a reader to their desk and ingest but that’s more time consuming and harder to archive. Depending on performance, sometimes users copy the footage through the network, log locally, then copy back to Terrablock. But hat’s time consuming too.

It’s nice to ingest immediately to the Terrablock because of RAID protection. RAW and converted files are archived to nearline. When on nearline, I have to reconnect the files to CAT DV because all footage can and will be reused in future projects. This is our growing stock footage collection which is the main reason for CAT DV.

If we went with MetaSAN, it would be nice to have the footage all online instead of moving it from online to nearline then back to online. And all files would be converted, logged, and kept in the same place until they would be moved into deep storage.

The shared volume over the network is new workflow for us. Although it’s a cool idea, it’s not ideal and this is why I’m looking into file level.

[Nate Cooper] ” now the GigE side of File Locking is working,”

I would be satisfied with that, although it’s a steep price just for GigE. Right now we all multitask and do not have a dedicated media wrangler. Making things simple is important.

My VAR would do the MetaSAN install. The Xserve would be the controller. If it works well when properly configured then this might be a good solution for us.

You could try the 1.4.1 update. Make sure you uninstall all the folders. Read below.

This is from an email that Red Giant sent me. It didn’t fix my situation but maybe it will fix your’s.

    1) Follow along with: https://www.redgiantsoftware.com/support/faq/product-specific/magic-bullet-looks/175/
    2) When you get to the Get Info section, please follow the following steps
    3) Open the sharing and permissions tab
    4) Click on the padlock to unlock the sharing and permissions.
    5) Click on the “+” icon
    6) Add in any account that isn’t greyed out
    7) Change the permissions to read and write, Leave “Everyone” as Read-Only
    8) Click on the wheel icon next to the “+”
    9) Select apply to enclosed items. (if applicable)

Do you have 1.4 for AE and 1.2 for FCP installed on the same system?
You have to pick one or the other.

November 2, 2010 at 9:26 pm in reply to: looking to put together a decent home system

    >>>Based on my situation, should I go with the slower 2.4 with 4 more cores, or the faster 3.33 with less?

Sorry for the flub. Obviously the 2.4 only has 2 more cores and 1 Ghz slower. My mind is almost set but I’m open for advice. I don’t want to make a bad decision here.

    Good feedback!

    >>>What is a ‘home system’?
My employer lets me work on freelance in my suite after hrs. I’ve been holding off of buying a system for home until I need to.

I just got a bigger freelance job and now would be the time to make the transition to get my own stuff. I have nothing at home so I’m starting from scratch. I’d like to stay as close to $3k as possible for the computer only. It doesn’t have to be tricked out now. And I can still capture/master to/from tape at work if necessary.

    >>>IMHO more, faster processors is always better. Even if FCP can’t use all the cores now, other apps can. And eventually FCP probably will too.
    But…
    >>>Whats your budget? What do you already own? Are you starting from scratch?

I have two 22” NEC tubes from an old adrenaline. Color/Brightness is still good. Budget for just the computer… as far under $4k as I can get. Will get Ram from OWC.

    >>>What is your experience and skill level?
    Broadcast professional.
    >>>What kind of clients and work will you expect to do?
My freelance clients range from simple corporate to broadcast.

    >>>How long do you expect to go without upgrading your system?

I’ll start off with a computer, software and single SATA.
I’ll add a raid, lcds, video monitor and sound as I go.
When all that’s done, I’ll go back upgrade the computer. Maybe add another processor from OWC if needed.

    >>>How long to you expect to take to make back the purchase of the system?
I have the cash for phase 1.

    >>>Unless this is strictly a hobby, your best bet is to do a biz plan before you plunk down the cash.
Good idea. It’s in my head but I need to write it down.

I looked at used 2008 2.8/3.0 8 cores and the new 3.33 6 core out performs them, plus I’d rather have new. So it’s either a new 2.4 eight core or 3.33 6 core. 3.33 is almost a ghz faster so I’m wondering if that’s better for FCP especially if it only uses 4 cores. I hear processor power is better.

I use lots of layers & fxs (BCC, Sapphire, Red Giant) so I want something that can keep up. I do use AE 25% of the time.

Based on my situation, should I go with the slower 2.4 with 4 more cores, or the faster 3.33 with less?

I do shoot photos too. Hundreds of raw 21mp at a time. But LR & PS and probably deal with either system I guess.
