I haven’t done too much with it lately, so I will need to pull it together. As I recall he basic concept was there but it needed tweaking. I will post what I have.

I did warn folks that render times could be very long, perhaps it should have been in very bold print. The best solution to avoiding the “nightmare” is to render when you are sleeping. Overnight renders are not unusual in 3D apps as well.

When I rendered without motion blur my render time was under two hours, with motion blur it was 11 hours. The lights do increase renders as well. I was also rendering at 360 by 240 full resolution for the tutorial.

I am planning to revisit strategies for improving renders etc… I have some thoughts on it and will release them when I can test them out; but my initial goal was to demonstrate that it could be done in AE not that it is the most efficient option.

Glad to be of help. I have not revisited the explosion aspect of this lately, but I was having some success, when I had to drop it and do a couple of matte paintings. Are you still in need of the exploding letters?

Another way to get an actual 3D extrusion and be able to use a comp camera is with the shatter effect. It is somewhat crude but depending on the font and how much you want to extrude it can work. The key is to make sure the shatter force has no impact on the layer whatsoever; create a custom shatter map using your text; In the effect parameters select render pieces only. Set the extrusion depth to whatever you require but smaller numbers work best. Set other parameters as needed. That’s it in a nutshell, if memory serves.

Make sure that the expressions in Layer 2 are not disabled.
