Rainer Wirth I’m not a fan of Adobe Premiere, but the package contains Photoshop and after effects. Anybody tried Smoke on the NAB?
Don’t write off Premiere just yet- The CS6 version looks like a big step forward, and is getting a lot of praise.
The “all-in-one” approach that Smoke is taking seems interesting, but my gut tells me that Premiere CS6 or Avid will be a better choice when it comes to pure editing.

It seems really bizarre to me that after all the time that has passed since this story was first made public, the only thing anyone knows regarding Premiere Pro at the BBC is that the BBC bought over a thousand copies of Premiere Pro. Aside from that the only thing that’s been said about this is what they “might” be using it for.
This whole thing is starting to sound like a story on Unsolved Mysteries or something.

I was mainly thinking of creating a preset from a clip or group of clips that could be used later, though the option to “paste as cascading preset” could be nice if you decide on the way to pasting a few clips somewhere that you want them to be linked to a cascading master.
I also thought there could be a panel where all of the cascading presets or effects that are actually being USED in your project are all shown in a list, so you can go there to make changes to the settings or copy them to other clips. This way you can always get to them easily without having to go searching for a clip that has the preset you need. This panel would be your project’s “style sheet”, so to speak.
Alex Udell the filter stack is added to the destination clip, but all the labels for the effects and channels for those effects are italicized when viewed on the destination clip.
this let’s you know that the channel values are being driven by the parent/master effect
I was thinking along those same lines. I thought it would be good if in the effect controls, the settings for the cascading preset had a different color background than standard effects.
Cliff Stephenson They could include a toggle in the filter to apply globally on/off so you could “lock” or “unlock” an effect to other clips in the edit.
I figured the preset and each effect in it could have a button next to it to toggle linking to the master settings on or off. I used the chain icon from Photoshop as an example.

Cliff Stephenson I think Greg is trying to drum up additional user support for the idea so that Adobe might see a lot of enthusiasm for it in the community and perhaps weight it differently than a single submission. (which is probably how most of their new features make it to the head of the line).

Bill Davis if this was a rollout for Apple – there would be countless loud voices here speculating (unfairly I might add) that the fact that they couldn’t do this in time for NAB is a clear sign that the entire development effort is understaffed, underfunded, and a sure sign of the ineptness of everything the dev team stands for. Hundreds of post would follow trying to to parse out what caused the “delay” – why this important software wan’t totally finished and ready for prime time for a formal roll-out at NAB.
Those voices would have been wrong – and for whoever reasons Adobe chooses to release their software whenever and however they choose is up to them – and I don’t think it means squat.
While I know you’re mostly speculating about Apple here, I don’t think it’s fair to make a comparison between Apple and Adobe when it comes to a launch like this.
Keep in mind that unlike Final Cut Studio, the Creative Suite has several different versions and only one of them is specifically targeting video production. So making sure the whole thing aligns perfectly with NAB probably isn’t as high a priority for them as we’d like it to be.
I think they did a great job of keeping the editing crowd informed though- they came here and provided links to information that hadn’t been formally announced yet, and also answered questions about the upcoming release. That, to me, was pretty significant.

David Roth Weiss there is presently a fairly well-publicized Abobe promotion, which entitles anyone to a free CS6 upgrade if you buy, udate, or crossgrade to CS5.5 through Sunday, May 6th.
Ah yes, I remember seeing something about that. My crystal ball may be inaccurate as well, but based on past experience I’m now guessing tomorrow, April 23rd, will be the official announcement (CS5.5 info on Adobe site replaced with CS6), and on May 7th it will be available. Then around a month or so after that the CS6 free trials will be posted.

I seriously doubt FCPX would have 52% of all seats rather than a few copies in 52% of the facilities.
52% of the FCPX “seats” are being used by Apple’s case studies!

Andrew Richards I think it is unfair to say Apple isn’t listening. They aren’t talking (much), but they insist they are listening.
If Apple was really listening, people would be upgrading to FCP 8 right now.
Adobe is listening, and Premiere Pro is starting to resemble a mixture of FCP 7 and Avid as a result. It appears that not many people asked Adobe to remove the source viewer and put in a magnetic timeline with no tracks…

The fact that this is a default adjustment built into every clip is pretty cool- but it does seem limited, and the fact that there’s a preset called “Alien Lab” gets me thinking again about X’s iMovie roots… 😛
