I know for importing XDCAM MXF files I needed to install the Sony software in order for it to work in Premiere Pro. What codec/media is the footage?

Luckily the files don’t take to long to convert. It’s not like transcoding to ProRes. I’d say for about 10 minutes of footage takes about a minute.

If you’re on the Mac it works natively. If on the PC you have to convert Nanoflash footage with a free file convertor program. However it doesn’t take very long.

  • I’m a PC with an i7 2.2 ghz processor with 12 gigs of RAM and haven’t had any issues with playback and I run off a basic 7200 rpm edit drive. I playback DSLR, DVC Pro HD 100, XDCAM, etc and it’s all smooth for me.

8 gigs of RAM does seem kind of low for your system though. Perhaps you need to add 4 to 8 more gigs?

I think 6GB of RAM is a bit low. I recommend at least 12. RAM is cheap nowadays.

The presets when setting up a sequence in Premiere Pro are there to optimize playback. Whenever mixing footage with different codecs/resolutions/framerates I choose the preset of the footage that I have the most of. You can also customize your sequence settings after selecting the preset if it’s not exactly what you want. A single true open timeline with just selecting resolution and framerate would be great but this method doesn’t bother me. I’ve mixed DSLR, XDCAM HD, XDCAM EX, AVCHD, DVCPRO HD, and RED with different framerates and resolutions on the same timeline and haven’t had any problems.

  • You can copy and paste individual effects from clip to clip. Just select the clip highlight the effect you want to copy from the effects window and hit Ctrl-C (Command – C on Mac) and then Control – V (Command – V on Mac) on the clip you want to paste it to. You can also select several effects on one clip to copy as well.

  • I downloaded the clip from the Dropbox link and loaded it on my PC running Windows 7 and Premiere Pro CS6 from the local drive and was able to play the clip with no problem (half resolution). My computer isn’t super powerful (i7 2.67ghz and 12 gigs of RAM) and it’s not having any trouble with it.

Must be a software issue with the graphics driver or something similar?

  • Did you use the DSLR preset for the sequence? Is there a yellow or red bar above your footage in the timeline?

I’ve had this issue randomly but never consistently on the same project. I usually just exit out and reload the project and the bug is gone. I’m on the PC side so perhaps Premiere Pro CS6 is more stable on Windows 7?
