    Video or film?

In any lighting design I create for video, approximately 99.9% of the lighting instrumentation has some form of color and diffusion in use.
A filter on the lens changes the entire color of the picture.
Through the use of color media, I can color every little element of my “painting” to enhance it however I see fit.

Please en-lighten me as to the type of equipment you bought.
I know of no ARRI “redhead”…nor do I believe they make an 800watt fixture.

June 18, 2008 at 3:32 am in reply to: lighting someone who doesn’t want to be seen

The background should be lit brightly with no light on the front of the person is the obvious technique. Why not make it interesting though. “Slash” the wall with light right behind the person’s head — perhaps in a color, perhaps with texture. Backlight the person’s shoulders but not their head at all. It’ll define their 3 dimensionality.
Put a black srim or nylon net between the person’s face and the camera and splash some textural light on the front of the scrim, but from a low angle. The more light you have on the front of the scrim the less transparent it will be, eventually rendering the person behind it “invisible”.

Check out ROSEBRAND’s website (one the the largest fabric comapanies servicing our industry in NYC) and click on “Stretch Shapes”. They do it best.
They take color and textural light very well, making lighting them easy and fun.

June 10, 2008 at 3:22 am in reply to: Dimmer Question

    Probably.
Normally such dimmers have a 300w maximum capacity. Somewhere on the dimmer it should tell you it’s capacity. If it doesn’t, spend the lousy 20 bucks and go to Home Depot and buy a new one — perhaps even a 600watt model.
Be advised, your ARRI will be pushing the 300w dimmer to it’s limit ….with no allowance.
