After Effects is more general in it’s GPU usage than Premiere Pro which is specific to nvidia and the CUDA cores. After Effects is using OpenGL to accelerate previews in certain cases and you can find the settings in the preferences panel.
After Effects + Photoshop = either nvidia or ATI

Yes, Premiere Pro CS5 has the ability to input your own text to align to a given clip, or if a script is part of the production, to align the clips to the script. This is in addition to the speech-to-text functionality that was provided in CS4.

You might check in the Premiere Pro forum as to why your project isn’t rendering correctly. One easy thing to do is to throw away your preferences file which is easy to do.
As for XML export, this is a feature of Premiere Pro CS5. Premiere Pro CS4 support FCP XML import only.

The Mercury Playback Engine is comprised of three aspects
1 – 64 bit native code (uses all your CPU cores and threads)
2 – 64 bit memory addressing
3 – GPU hardware acceleration with an appropriate nvidia GPUYou’re going to get 2 of the 3 aspects no matter what. I think the question you need to ask yourself is whether you’re going to use Color or not. A lot of people like it, but not as many people use it regularly. If Color is a part of your workflow, understand whether nvidia will work with it at all and decide accordingly.

At that point, why not just export to Adobe Media Encoder which is a 64-bit application (CS5) and renders in the background while you continue to edit another timeline in Premiere Pro.

A laptop can edit the 7D footage with Premiere Pro but as others have stated, a desktop system would give you better performance.
For a laptop, get the most RAM you can stick in it – I believe it’s still only 8GB. From there, you should be able to edit footage and use other apps. As Dave said, both AE and Premiere Pro are 64-bit so can take advantage of all of your available RAM.
the nvidia card doesn’t come into play for a laptop and only becomes really important once you start adding effects. the GPU acceleration essentially offloads the effects from the CPU to the GPU, so if it’s mostly cuts editing on a laptop, you don’t really need the GPU acceleration.
To counter Dave’s point about 4 vs 8GB for AE: 8GB is WAY better for AE than 4, especially if you’re doing HD work. His basic point of sticking as much memory in there as you can if you’re doing a lot of AE work does apply though.
All that to say what I said in the beginning – laptop good (and usable), desktop better.

The basic idea of speech-to-text feature in Premiere Pro has not changed much from CS4 to CS5 though there are some minor workflow improvements. What Adobe added in CS5 was in addition to the speech-to-text the ability to syncronize the video and dialog to a script. You can also manually enter the text and have it line up that way as well. So, there are two different methods now, depending on the materials you have.

Adobe Media Encoder, Compressor, After Effects can all do the job. If you’re looking for DVCProHD (960×720), you can create a native P2 file structure using Adobe Media Encoder.

If you have an NTSC/PAL monitor that takes an HDMI input, then the BMD Intensity card is a good, inexpensive way to go. It will support AE previews to the best of my knowledge.

June 28, 2010 at 2:17 pm in reply to: best export settings from final cut to adobe premiere pro cs3You can edit the ProRes media in Premiere Pro CS3 by putting it into a “desktop” mode in the playback settings.
With CS5 you can also take any clip and drag it to the new item icon and it will create a sequence based on the clip settings – similar to FCP’s functionality.
