March 19, 2009 at 3:30 pm in reply to: College degree really necessary ?

    +1 for Mark’s post.

My degree is in Political Science. I also took Bible courses. I learned photography while in school but not from the school. Then I went and got a job at a start up running camera, lighting, designing and building sets and occasionally running audio. I progressed to being a very good studio cameraman and then began to direct. The live 2 hour unscripted talk show was a challenge to direct but I and four others did it in rotation. Then I moved to video tape operations and learned to manually edit. Then to the editor’s chair editing on quad machines. Then to a CMX 340 type edit controller on 1″ type C. Then to Sony 9000 linear edit controller on D2 and BetaSP. Then to non-linear on smoke and fire and Final Cut.

I say all this to reinforce that my choir and band performing experiences in college, my writing long papers, my social life, all connected me to people who hired me and who have been my friends for 35 years now. Oh, and please, learn to spell correctly! 🙂 Best of luck.

Start with a rectangle and make your color lines. Then go to filters and use distort>pinch to reduce the center. Then experiment with distort>wave or ripple or others to get the twist.

Back in the day there was “Television Production Handbook” by Zetl, a college level textbook. It covers a lot of areas like aspect ratios, square vs. rectangular pixels, etc. I’m not sure if it’s still around nor if it has been revised for the digital era. You might go to a university website like USC or UCLA and see what books they use in digital production classes. These could be a good resource.

    Hey Todd
If you need any b-roll footage for you project the US Catholic Conference in Washington did a doc here in the mid 90s and probably has the source footage up there now. Brand new DigiBeta cameras shot the footage, which would uprez well to HD.

Nicely done. As Tim said, you used music to carry the piece and the music’s emotion lets the audience know the seriousness of the topic. You don’t just cut to black but use a variety of transtitions to tell the story.

I once did an hour documentary where there were only 3 dissolves in the show and they were in the open. I didn’t realize that until the show was completed but a cut is all you need if it moves the story forward. Sometimes other transitions get in the way.

February 19, 2009 at 1:30 pm in reply to: Avid vs Premiere vs FCP, legit question…

There is one reason to be on Avid: ScriptSync. Hopefully other editors will come out with similar products for documentarians and other long form editors.

That said, we’re moving from Autodesk Discreet to FCP next week (or should I say the install begins?)

I’m not sure how this handles alpha but it looks interesting:
https://www.openmovieeditor.org/ but it is for linux.
https://jahshaka.org/ has been around a while but also usable. It may be a bit advanced for beginners so look at what it offers.

I guess Windows Movie Maker and/or iMovie don’t do what you need?

I’ve seen this device used occasionally in emotional interviews(eg: cancer survivors, etc.). It helped carry the story and give the viewer a moment to react to the emotion. It has to be very sensitively done or it will get boring in a hurry.

February 19, 2009 at 1:10 pm in reply to: Illustrator: of any worth to editors?

I’ve learned enough to edit vector files. I get a lot of pdf graphics and its ability to edit those makes it useful. I also use a lot of eps corporate logos on our various program funders (PBS) and use it to scale those and occasionally modify them as well. I’m not thoroughly conversant but use if for what my needs are. Since it comes in the Adobe suite it’s nice to have around.
