Thanks Mark, I was indeed looking for the component in the wrong place (˜/Library/QuickTime). I should have read your post more carefully!

I had the same problem after I upgraded to Snow Leopard – when trying to open a vob in mpeg-streamclip, a message would tell me that the mpeg-2 playback component was missing. I did a clean install of Snow Leopard (no need to install Leopard before), reinstalled FCS 2 and all my programs, what a pain, and now everything works again. Don’t forget to check the ‘Install QuickTime 7’ when installing Snow Leopard.

(By the way, I can’t see the mpeg-2 playback component in the Library, and it wasn’t there neither in Tiger nor in Leopard, what is the exact name and location? Just in case things go wrong again… I don’t feel like starting the whole reinstall process again)
