The difference in QuickTime is one reason why you can’t run FCP 4.5 and FCP 5 on the same system. There are more.

If you can’t buy a new drive, you could partition your existing drive and set up two systems on the one drive, one for 4.5 and one for 5.

One gotcha there is unless you can clone the existing drive, you’ll have to re-build it from the original install disks. Another is the drive may be too small for two full systems if partitioned.

If this is a one shot thing, it’s probably not worth it. You’d be better off borrowing a FCP 4.5 system from someone who’s still running it. Or take FCP 5 off the system and install 4.5.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

[Matte] “Anyone got change for a nickel?”

I used to have half a penny my grandpa “made” for me by pinching the penny in a vice….would that help?!?!

    If you’re asking what I think you’re asking…

There are two options. 1. Put a short slug on a layer above your 2 video tracks and dissolve out to that. 2. Nest the two layers together and dissolve the nest to black. (Both work the same way for dissolving up from black, too)

FCP is doing exactly what you’re telling it to. It’s showing you each layer at 50% opacity halfway through your dissolve. You *should* see through the top layer at that point if you just dissolved each one layer out or changed the opacity with keyframes.

I use both the Wacom tablet and the mouse.

However, I’m left handed but learned to mouse with my right hand. I always have the stylus in my left hand & the mouse in my right, unless I’m doing work best suited to the keyboard.

I love it! I miss it dearly when I go to client’s offices that don’t have one.

  • I don’t know how this devolved.

I merely offered an alternate point of view.

I’ve been editing since the tail end of the 1″ days. Insinuating that I’m inexperienced and therefore my opinion should be nullified due to the fact that you deem me unqualified….well, that just doesn’t seem to fit in with the spirit of an open forum. Forgive me, however, if I’ve misinterpreted your meaning.

There are many many things that FCP does that drive me nuts. There are many things it does that it shouldn’t, There are many things it does that it should do better. There are obviously things it doesn’t do that would be ham-dandy if it did. I’m not disputing any of that.

In my experience, and my very humble opinion, that if I were going to get my bundies in an undle over something, it wouldn’t be this, because this at least makes more sense to me than some of the other things FCP does or doesn’t do that it should not or should do.

I’m not complaining that you don’t agree with me. I don’t care if you don’t agree with me, You’re entitled to your opinion and your workflow, as am I. I was just offering another way to look at it that I find makes it less frustrating. I was hoping to help someone else understand the inner workings of the FCP architecture a wee bit better to give them a chance to not get too frustrated over this, because as I’ve also said, currently we have no choice.

  • I believe I said it would be nice to have the option, but considering currently we do not, I’d rather that it is the way it is rather than have the out marked one frame early and have to edit around it. I edit more than I time.

    debe

  • The reason it is that way is so that you can jump to “out” and you wouldn’t be destroying the last frame when you overwrite, or slice it off and make a flash frame out of it when you insert your next edit at the end of your next edit.

Think of it more like FCP is an editing tool, not a timing tool. The function, as it is, is far more convenient when you’re editing. That’s what it’s for. An extra arrow key back is not that big of a deal, and easy enough to program into your brain so that you don’t even think about having to do it. I wouldn’t mind being able to have a modifier key combo to choose, but if I only get one, I’d rather have it the way it is.

    Just my 2 cents

FireWire drives aren’t recommended for use by Apple.

Many use them and “get away” with it. Many come here looking for solutions when it starts going wonky on them.

I’ve even used them for super-short, uncomplicated projects when I’ve had to travel.

    However, they’re just not recommended.

    One additional thought:

FCP4 was rife with bugs. The upgrade to 4.5 is (or at least WAS) free.

Any reason you can’t download the upgrade at the Apple website and upgrade to FCP 4.5?

Not recommended if you’re in the middle of a project, obviously….

FCP 4.5 and QT 7 aren’t reliable together. You need to either upgrade to FCP 5 or go to the Apple site and download the installer to revert to QT 6.5.2.

    https://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime652reinstallerforquicktime701.html

Depending on which version of QT 7 you have.

Also, you are correct. You can’t directly see HDV files in FCP HD (4.5). The “HD” in FCP HD refers to DVCPro HD. You’d need Lumiere HD to ingest the HDV material to use in conjunction with FCP 4.5.

Best solution is to upgrade to FCP 5.

You’re not planning on using FireWire drives, are you?
