Wow, thanks, David, but I’m in the midwest! That’s a long communte!
I really appreciate the offer. It turns out the client needs a 2nd copy of a master I already gave him a month ago. He just thought it would be easier if I made another master rather than having his guy hook up two DVCam decks at his office and make a copy. Now we know that the latter would be easier!
I thought it wouldn’t be that big of a deal, so I said, “sure, I just need to swap out the drives, no problem!”. when I called him back and said, “Hmmm, well, when I said it’s be no problem, I was gravely mistaken…”
Issue averted!
With my luck, though, the SATA enclosure will arrive today, two days ahead of schedule!

Hah!! Simple is relative! Well, there’s simple, and then there’s easy…on an intellectual level, I understand the process.
However, I do not have the strength in my fingers to get the drives out. My husband confirmed that it takes quite a bit of pull from the fingertips, and since I can’t open a jar of pickles without assistance, he suspects I’d have trouble here…
We have made other arrangements, but still, thanks! Very good infomation to have handy for future reference!

No, the enclosure hasn’t arrived yet, hence my quandry. I need to put the old SATA drives back in the G5 where the new SATA drives are right now. I need to revert back to my old system before the upgrade, as it were. As if those new drives never existed.
My husband did the install, but he’s working a show in Palm Springs, the rotten little lucky devil!
I need to know if there’s a website that will give me step-by-step instructions on how to do this, or if it’s easy, can someone just give me them here!

Well, a proper FCP system includes external audio and video monitors.
A mixer comes in handy adjusting the feed going to your external audio monitors, as well as giving you an option to connect your Mac’s audio out through the mixer to your nice audio monitors.

I needed to upgrade because I work with other folks who use FCP 5. I need to be able to effortlessly move projects between systems. All the systems need to match.
If you don’t have that issue, and you don’t need the added benefits of FCP 5, Motion 2, or SoundTrack Pro, then upgrading isn’t necessarily the best option.
But if you have to do it, it makes way more sense to do it right the first time.

It’s more than doubling your budget, which may be cost prohibitive, but consider a two-tiered approach.
I have both a G5 tower and a 17″ G4 laptop. The tower came first. About 8 months later came the laptop. I have the best of both worlds. I have the full power of the tower when I need it, and the portability of the laptop when I need that. Moving projects between the two is relatively simple. It’s the reason I have a series of FW drives.
The tower is a work-only station. I keep off the internet unless I’m downloading updates or FTP media. The laptop is my email, internet & word processing workhorse. I expect it to give me more trouble with the laptop, and I do occasionally have weird little issues.
If this is a business for you, the investment is worth it! I can’t believe how much I labored over the decision to buy the laptop. It more than paid for itself within 6 months or so.

I agree with Walter’s suggestions.
From my own observations, the folks who come here in a panic because their newly upgraded system is freaking out on them did not do what Walter suggests. It usually takes quite a few back-and-forths before they admit that they did a slap-dash upgrade because they didn’t think they had the time to do it properly, and hoped that it’d just be ok.
What they didn’t think about is how long it could take them to unravel it after doing an improper install procedure. They end up spending way more time than they would have doing it correctly in the first place trying to figure out why it’s wigging out on them. Most of the time, they end up trashing the install and starting over anyway.
I waited with 2 boxes of upgrades in my office for months until I had the time. I’m only halfway done. I still have my laptop to go to upgrade to FCP Studio.
It may seem like a lot of time, but it’s so worth it. After you spend the time, and then spend some time here reading all of the “horror stories”, you’ll get this odd feeling of “Wow, I don’t have those problems!”, feeling empathy for those who do, and wondering why yours just works, and eventually you’ll realize that it’s because you did a proper upgrade!

Also try an audio mixdown of the audio. That’s OPT+CMD+R. Even if you only have one track, it can be helpful with dropped frame and mysteriously disappearing audio issues. It’s a render file that’s created, not a new media file like in Avid. Just hit OPT+CMD+R and let it go, as soon as it’s done processing, you are good to go. No importing or exporting necessary.
However, if the mixdown alone doesn’t work, the above suggestion after mixing down would be the next best option to try.
