oh, and then there’s the third way…
Sometimes the person creating the .ppt doesn’t know anything about video, or doesn’t know it’s destined for video, and doesn’t conform to video standards.
The fonts are too small, the lines are too thin, and the aspect ratio is all wrong in those cases.
Then I recreate the .ppt in text and graphics, either in Photoshop or in LiveType and use my own files instead

There’s two ways to do this, and it depends on the way the PowerPoint presentation was originally created.
Keynote can open and export a .ppt. However, if there is embedded audio or video, or if they used the “fancy’ transitions, it won’t translate well.
I usually try that first, it usually doesn’t work, and then I end up running the .ppt to tape and capturing instead.

It’s probably a mismatch in FCP versions. There was no “FCP 5.5” release. Which one is it really?
Check both computers, and make sure they are running the exact same verison of FCP. Also, note the version of the OS and QuickTime, too.
If they are not the exact same version (eg FCP 5.1.4), the one that is “higher” will create files that will not be recognized by the older version.

During capture, what Clip Settings did you use?
During editing, what Sequence Settings did you use?
After you finfished editing, what Export Settings did you use?
It’s probably one of those.

There have been many many reports that FCP 4.5 and OS 10.4.x don’t play well together because there is a huge change in how QuickTime operates between 10.3.9 and 10.4.
The two solutions are to revert back to OS 10.3.9 or to upgrade FCP tp 5.1.x or above. Since you’re already planning the upgrade to FCS 2, maybe it’s time to jump.
Try this first, though.

It’s seems to be the answer to non-communicative DV devices, but it may not solve all your issues because of the mismatch.

Actually, it’s the other way around, Steve.
The company is SmartSound.
One of their products is Sonicfire Pro.
I’m a relatively new user of Sonicfire Pro. I purchased it at MacWorld back in January, and really had a good chance to get familiar with it on a project for NAB.
It’s excellent for those like me that are….well…. musically inept! I can keep tempo, but that’s about it. You don’t need to be a musician to use it. The Strata Series tracks are so versitile that one track on a disk has three to six variations and on top of that, each variation can have up 10 or more moods. That’s some serious math that will show you that each disk with 12-14 tracks can have so may variations that I can’t even calculate right now.
Now, I love my audio editors, and I’m not about to try to take them out of the equation, but the video editor and producer having the ability to get into more complex “rough” music picks before the audio mix is a new workflow that I’m really excited to explore.

The reason the DSR-11 bogs down the bus is because it’s essentially a FW100 device. It drags the entire bus down to FW100. You’re FW drives, and probably your MOTU device need at least FW400, if not 800, to operate in the manner to which you’ve become accustomed.
The entire bus is slowed down to the lowest communication rate of the “dumbest” device on the bus. ‘Tis the nature of the beast.
That’s why it’s usually recommended that input/monitoring and storage be split up onto separate busses.

What’s your goal?
If you’re sending to an audio facility, three separate AIFFs if usually the way to go, if they can’t take an OMF. If they can take an OMF, then that’s what you want to export, plus a self-contained, usually low res, small frame size QT file of the timeline that they can use for reference. (that is usuually requested for either the AIFF or OMF method)
If it’s something else, please tell us what you’re doing, or why you need to get these files out separately. It may help us hel you figure out a workflow for you that’s efficient.
