I had similar issuess consistently whenever I used version 4.x w/jpeg files. Usually, a “green screen” would appear where I previously had a jpeg image. Very often, FCP would crash when i had jpegs in my sequence. When I convert them to PICT, the problem always goes away. With FCP 5.x I have been able to use jpegs without a hiccup.

If the audio and video tracks are linked, just position your mouse at the end of the clip and press the Control key and choose Add Transition. This will add the default audio and video transition to those tracks.
