    Hi Jon,

After some time I think I’ve figured out what’s going on.

The AVI file the client gave me was recorded using ZD Soft screen capture, using an Xvid Codec. It looks great in WMP or QT as a stand alone file but as soon as I try to import it into any Editing application (AVID, FCP, Premiere) they pick up on all the artifacts within the codec, and the the resolution drops.

After many, MANY different attempts we finally managed to use FCP to create a project at the file’s native settings, 1024 x 576 then render the sequence using the animation codec. Then exported the sequence as a QT file using the same codec. This gave me a QT file that AVID recognizes and looks ok. Although I have to say it’s not a great result, but a workable solution.

Looking forward I need to find a screen capturing application that creates AVI’s using a format and codec that can be edited with.

Hi Jon and thanks for replying.

The only options available to me when I import media are 5 tabs; Image, OMFI, Shot Log, Audio and XDCAM. I’ve been trying various combinations with little luck.

I have ben using Sorenson Squeeze to try various compressions in that, before importing into the Avid but I’m still losing quality. Basically everything looks as if it’s 15:1 (I’ve checked that too)

What’s confusing me is that FCP imports the same file with hardly any delay. It’s a 25min AVI file, at about 40MB. But Avid takes over an hour to import it!!

You can’t, at least not in Avid. But what you can do is create another Video track (in Avid it’s Ctrl Y) then copy your existing V1 and above tracks to the clipboard (Alt C) Then just move them all up, V1-V2, V2-V3 etc and paste, overwriting your V1 track as you go.

Alternatively create a copy of your sequence, rename it accordingly and then overwrite your sequence with the copy, ensuring you leave V1 free.

    Hope that helps 🙂
