I know literally no one who uses it, but several who gave it a shot. That 5.5 million users stat seems pretty unlikely.

They are getting pretty far from their roots with the new marketing push. In much of their copy they are specifically calling out to YouTubers, gamers, and others. IMO that is so not the right audience for Lightworks. Juxtaposing that with the same screenshots from the Wolf of Wall Street they’ve been using for years is pretty strange. The people who seem to love it seem to do so because of things like cutting dialogue – narrative stuff.

Great suggestion! Thanks. Especially for archiving this is helpful.

I’m making the move right now. I purchased a USB dongle with the Speed Editor. I’m coming from Premiere Pro.

Why I’m making the jump is 18+ months of awful stability issues with Premiere. I’ve limped along, dealing with the crashes as they come and working around Premiere to get my work done – but I’ve had it with Premiere.

If anyone wants to make the move, I do highly recommend the speed editor. At least for me, it’s helped bridge the muscle-memory gap as I get used to the keyboard settings in Resolve vs. Premiere.

So far my concerns/headaches have been:

    – Database vs Premiere’s project files. I can’t fully explain why but getting my head used to this for my file management has been a pain. I like with Premiere that I can simply have a folder in Finder/Explorer that contains subfolders I’ve made for project files, media and assets, etc. etc. so if I want to archive that project or move that project I just grab that one folder and my work is done. Resolve doesn’t seem to want to work that way. I believe that unless I create a database for every single project (which feels cumbersome/incorrect), I have to rethink how I manage my projects and that is frustrating. Also, moving a database from machine to machine is not a straightforward process. I do it – as I keep my personal work on an external SSD – but connecting to a database is an unintuitive process.

    – While the rest of Resolve has been fantastically stable for me, the Fusion tab is virtually useless it is so unstable, at least for me on my Windows and macOS machines. So I’m rendering out of AE and/or Fusion Studio for the foreseeable future.

    – I miss the option of dynamic link (as animation is 60%-70% of the creative work I do) but it has been so buggy for me in Premiere lately that I’ve more often than not doing it the tried-and-true way of rendering comps out of AE so it’s not a huge loss for me, to be honest.

    – Working with a team. Literally no one else I know uses Resolve for editing, and my full-time job is with a creative team in an all-Adobe shop so I don’t see making the jump 100% anytime soon. For now, just personal and freelance.

I haven’t had experience with anything more specialty like that, so I can’t say.

For our purposes, we’ve just purchased large touch screens (Elo brand) from B&H and ran the Intuiface experience with a chromebox. We also ran the same experience on an iPad for a smaller kiosk version.

+1 here for Intuiface. We’ve used it for several clients for interactive kiosk type things. Super easy to use and deploy on low-cost hardware.

Unfortunately my best solution has been to run audio to cameras and use the HDMI audio instead of the 1/8″. Seems like it’s easier to avoid ‘plumbing problems’ as Ty mentioned earlier. Working with different sound boards (and sound people) and with my clear deficit of solid audio knowledge, getting a simple XLR line out into one of my cameras has been a pretty easy solution with less issues instead of fussing with converting to 1/8″ for the ATEM.

Toggl and Clockify both have good free tiers that offer automatic tracking when you launch specific programs. They also have idle detection options.

[Oliver Peters] “The ISO model also generates an “EDL” from the live switch that opens in Resolve, syncs the ISO H264 angles, and allows you to clean up/re-edit the recorded event. If you also used BMD cameras and recorded BRAW in-camera at the same time, then Resolve can relink to the BRAW files instead of the H264 ISO files for final mastering. Resolve update out today.”

I missed this part of the announcement! That’s pretty awesome. While I love our ATEM Mini Pro and have no interest in paying for the upgrade, if we were buying today this bit would be a hard feature to say “no” to.

  • I’d make the argument that because of COVID there are significantly more production events happening now than before that demand equipment like switchers, and especially an appetite for cheap options like Blackmagic. With in-person events becoming ever rarer, more things are going to live-streaming (graduations, conferences, houses of worship, etc.) so more people are live streaming now than before – and a lot of them are doing it for the first time, so cheaper options like Blackmagic have got to be pretty popular.

Got it. This gets me a lot closer to figuring out a solution. Thanks so much!
