I would stick with a ProRes master, and if you really want to squeeze every drop of goodness out of your video you could request that they output at ProRes 4444. However, the file will be 2X as large as HQ, and you will probably not be able to see any difference whatsoever in terms of quality.

The issue is most likely that your colorist is working on a PC and thus unable to output ProRes. So, there are only a few choices for them, and the version Avid DNX that most closely matches ProRes HQ is a very reasonable choice. I think the one they should use is DNX 185x, where the x indicates 10-bit. Just be sure to quality check the final master, as there have been some reports of black frames when moving between ProRes and DNX, though those reports may or may not be issues involving “pilot error.”

What codec was the camera original? Was it edited natively, or was it transcoded before editing?

If I were you I’d download the AJA System Test and if compare that against the results from both the ATTO and BM test apps. Frankly, I think it’s odd you would believe the ATTO software over the BM software, but the AJA software will serve as a good tiebreaker so to speak.
Also, the BM 4K Extreme does not have any hardware acceleration, so not sure why you think that would help?

First, hard drives are so cheap these days that consolidating is simply not the big deal it was when storage was really expensive.
Second, FCP Media Manager handles different codecs in different ways, and is especially lousy at dealing with Long GOP codecs and other MPEG variants, such as those recorded by DSLRs. Since you have not divulged the codec you’re editing it’s tough to offer informed help.
Third, so long as you use Copy rather than Move all Media Manager functions are non-destructive. So, though I don’t recommend consolidating, if you’re intent on trying it, just make sure to use Copy to a designated hard drive rather than Move, and you’ll be fine.

Hey Tad,
My reasoning in asking you for the codec and seq settings is simply that some codecs, especially those that Long GOP, can have issues. And, I was thinking that maybe you should transcode just the clip you’re trying to slow to Pro Res to see if that changes anything.
I’m pretty sure your AVC Intra is not Long GOP, but it is a fairly processor intensive codec, perhaps you should try transcoding to a hi-performance codec like Pro Res as a test?

Tad, you’ve been here long enough to know that if you if you don’t supply enough information that delays your answer, cuz guys like me are gonna need to quiz you for the missing stuff. Right?
What is the codec of that clip? What are your sequence settings/preview settings???

If it’s free try it, but make sure to backup everything. Hardware RAIDs are much more robust and reliable, and typically have higher throughput.
If you’re purchasing a new unit you’ll do a whole lot better with the deal on G-tech RAID I mentioned two or three threads down in this forum, which incorporates hardware RAID, enterprise level drives, and generates 660MB/sec vs 440MB/sec of the Lacie.
