Humm??? That’s very surprising and very unusual Ariella. Unfortunately, it indicates a potentially more complicated fix, unless it’s a simple cure that you can achieve by just trashing preferences. Try that first… If it cures your symptoms terrific, if not, we’ll have to go deeper.
Meanwhile, which version of the OS are you running?

First off, they don’t call it the Mercury Render Engine, it’s the Mercury Playback Engine, and you’re not using it to your advantage, that’s one reason you’re having playback issues.
You have an Nvidia card, put it to use… Setup your Cuda or OpenCL.

If you really love the software you’re simply shooting yourself in the foot.
Get over it man, $50 a month is chicken feed. Time is money, and you’re frittering it away by grousing here and taking the time to learning a silly new way to edit instead of just making money.

Cool workflow Paul… I’m also just starting to wrap my brain around a lot of the new cloud and library features.
Al Mooney from Adobe presented some new features last night at the LACPUG meeting here in LA, and a really cool feature coming in the next version is frame rate conversion using Screenflow – if it works as well as touted, the days of worrying about inferior conversions are over.

There are many around here who simply don’t like anything, so do yourself a favor and try it out for yourself, after all, it’s 100% free. 🙂

If you ever intend to online at 4K resolution, then transcode to Pro Res Proxie or LT at the same 4K pixel dimensions and frame rate of your original – that way you’ll have no issues when you online later if you’ve repositioned or animated your video, or if you’ve created graphics.
Adobe Media Encoder would be the way to go… Test with a single file to setup and test your encode, then once you’re sure it’s right, do a batch encode and let it run overnight or over the weekend. Make certain you’re directing it to a drive with tons of free space, cuz you’ll be very unhappy if you return to find your batch transcode failed and has to be entirely redone.
