Thanks Jeremy! So that’s 15 megabytes or megabits?

This really shouldn’t come as a surprise. Apple has a history of yanking the rug out from under users and business partners. Remember when Steve Jobs returned to Apple from exile a few years ago? The first thing he did was kill off all of the Mac clone manufacturers. No telling how many millions were lost by those guys.

The realistic half of us who saw the preview at NAB knew this was coming. The other half were just gaga over it like anything Apple introduces. (For the life of me, I can’t understand Apple worship.)

It’s too bad they did just sell FCP to a company like AJA that understands the production business and how to take care of their customers.

Avid Media Composer is a great editor and many of us will move that way and really like it. Avid’s tech support, by all accounts, still stinks. Apparently, even a near-death experience at the hands of Apple didn’t change them.

Bob, I’m sorry to hear this happened to you. I was hoping that maybe Avid had learned something from their near-death experience – apparently not.

Well, with this week’s disastrous (predicted) release of FCPX, Avid will surely get some new customers. Let’s hope they read our complaints and respond. Not holding my breath…

I bought MC but I haven’t abandoned FCP yet. I think it’s smart to have an escape plan for when Apple bails on us.

I’m under no illusion that Avid has changed one bit – hence the post.

Cold, hard, economics works on both sides of the fence. Professional video people are not “where it’s at” for Apple. The big money is in iOS and related hardware. That’s where Apple is headed. That’s why I’m ready to entertain the thought of going back to Avid. Since they rely on professionals for their core business, I at least have a reasonable expectation that they aren’t going to walk away from their products.

I went to Vegas, saw the FCPX demo and talked to execs at organizations that have large installed bases of FCP. When they’re telling you that it’s over, it’s probably over.

Good luck pinching and swiping your way to a good edit on your iPad.

John, when you realize that Apple probably makes more on iPhones in a few days than they do on FCP in a year, then you’ll realize that they’re telling you and me the same thing.

Oh but it does – don’t you know the Avid execs are reading this forum with great delight?

John, I saw the demo in Vegas and I talked with lots of users from facilities much larger than ours. All I can say is watch how many of them DON’T “upgrade” to FCPX.

Hector, you can certainly take issue with any of my recollections of history – I won’t argue that.

The reason I wrote the post was to point out that Avid has a second chance to treat their customers fairly and respectfully. My experience, which no one can debate, was terrible. That’s why I went to Final Cut even though I would rather edit on an Avid any day.
