Well that was my initial attempt as I stated. It wouldn’t ay back at even the lowest resolution. It’s a multi cam sequence.

I spoke to soon. I turned on the computer this morning and nothing works off my Lacie. I can open movies from my mac HD but no libraries will open from the Lacie. I tried copying the whole library to another external hd, but it won’t allow it. Last night everything was working fine again.

Strangley the project hangs at random places whereas before it hung at events. I’m losing all kinds of time and money right now.

I’m not sure which fixed the problem, but after running Onyx for a full cleaning, I also went inside the library and trashed all the render files manually. Seems to be working now.

    Thanks,

I’m not seeing the file he saw. Just the normal current event file. Should I try creating a new library and copying the package contents from one to the other?

Pancaking in FCPX is awful (I’m doing it right now). If you’re trying to make a highlight out of a large live sequence (multi cam), there is no fast way to do this in FCPX. Browser based editing is the only only way to gain speed in X. Now if a nest could retain markers from the sequence, and you could cut into the timeline without having to go the extra step of breaking apart a clip every time, we’d have something comparable. Btw, if you nest a multi-clip and cut it back in from the browser, the clip loses it’s angle. Huge pita.

One thing that drives me crazy is that in every other NLE, I can use I/O points to quickly jump from anywhere in the timeline back to where I was cutting. So if I have a string out and want to pull something from later in the TL, I just set an in point, go find my clip and “go to in” (if I was not pancaking/Avid source side sequencing). Since we lost I/O for range, there’s no way to do this. So big sequences become huge hassles. Also if there were a way to make a secondary retain position (like a track) and all clips could be turned off at once, this too would help and could be possibly used as a faux pancake technique.

    Craig,

You can attempt the same thing in X with compound clips but it is much more sloppy. For one, you can’t see the separate clip lengths and i/o marks as they’re nested. Pancake editing involves to an extent grabbing the clip up top and dragging to where you please. Also for me, I enjoy using markers a LOT. The marker system in X is beyond weak. Avid doesn’t have the capability for pancake editing, however you could employ the “nested sequence in the browser technique” as you would with X. The difference is, all the markers you used in the sequence will show up in the browser/viewer and. And when you cut into the sequence/project (with Avid) the clip will be separated. X will retain its nest which will require you to break part every clip you used.

Speaking of markers, All the other Major NLE’s give marker options which could be used along with sub clipping or an alternative workflow to how Alban is doing it. In X, no colored markers, no maker list drop down in the browser, no marker retention in the nest. Now if X allowed 2 simultaneous projects to be opened I suppose you could use the database function on the left (whats that thing called again) to achieve some nice results. For now, browser based editing is really the only way, which most people may not mind. Every clip showing the same length with lack of a viewer can be annoying as I constantly find myself having to expand longer clips to get the proper selection.

  • Cee, there is are a few confusing videos on Youtube that have some improper info regarding the whole “.old .new” clips. Everything Shane says is correct. Remember that your ama bins MUST BE OPEN to relink. This tripped me up a while ago. But that is only concerning offline/online.

In the past there was not a whole lot of education by way of books or videos for Avid. Now, however their official cert books are excellent and cover much of what you need to know, though there are some very specific workflows that pertain to Avid that one has to dig deeper to find answers to.

Taking a few weeks to go through these books will save you countless hours into the future and give you a better grasp of concepts that may fly by to quickly on video tutorials.

I believe you’re referring to a “reverse matchframe”. All the other majors have it. I think common sense dictates that it would function in the active project especially since only one can be open at a time anyway.

So only the mouse is modal huh? I was in the middle of building a custom set of hotkeys actually which is what prompted the question. I appreciate your help. Seems like you have to set 4x the number of hotkeys to trim from the keyboard. I was hoping the trim tools were more keyboard centric.

  • Are you wrapping/transcoding media first and “leaving it in place?” How would you deal with FS700 footage for example that needs to optimize in FCP X. I suppose you can dig it out the library and move it to an external folder.
