  • That was extremely helpful! So when one consolidates, do the files have the same privilege as DNX (multi-cam, AAF export, Quicktime Ref export etc…)? You know all the things that would give you a headache if you tried editing with AMA footage?

  • Interesting, I asked a question on consolidate vs transcode and it seems that there is always conflicting answers on this. I have been using consolidate to move projects after completion, but I keep hearing others talk about consolidate upon ingesting footage. This part I don’t understand much in when I would use consolidate on ingest vs transcode.

Seriously? There’s no range based exports? You know the more I’m tempted to jump in and try X out, the more I get scared that simple things I’ve become accustomed to will be missing and making me tear my hair out. I’ve Been cutting on MC and I don’t get you ex-avid users that hate it so much. Especially if you’ve used 5-6.

This is only allowed though with no cuts in the sequence, meaning if I’ve synced several clips from a 5d onto one track I have to make a separate sequence for every single stop. Is this really the only way?

  • Jaun thanks so much for your help. I actually figured that out at about 1 AM or so. The thing about cutting in FCP is, well, first it sucks compared to Avid and second when most of my projects are cut on Avid, having to switch back and forth multiple times a week is a huge slowdown for me. I’m a very heavy keyboard jockey in both programs. My fingers get used to Avid/FCP shortcuts and having to jump back takes time to adjust. I feel like if I can get this workflow down it would really help me.

They’re just clips then? How are you going about importing them? and whats happening when you try?

You can fast import Quicktimes (do a search on that). You can save time by transcoding via Mpeg stream clip (a free app) to a DNX format and then fast importing that into Avid. This will keep your system from being tied up during long transcode processes

When you say “material” are you referring to viewing quicktime files or bringing a complete project from Avid to FCP? If its the latter, you need to you Automatic Duck or Boris Transfer. If you read my thread below, I’m currently doing this.

  • So I ran a test on a short sequence. I transcoded to Prores LT MXF, then went to export the AFF. Now I tried copying the media to another folder, but Avid would not allow this for Prores. So I check “link to” and exported an AFF when I imported into FCP the media was all offline, and was asking for .mov’s that didn’t exist anywhere, or that I couldn’t locate.

Do I need to transcode to DNX from Avid and then Create Prores on import? Which step did I miss?

  • I did some searching, and was trying to figure out if pro import 2.0 supports avid multi-cam?
