[Bill Davis] “It isn’t as sleek and sexy looking as, say, the Cion. But I wonder all that upgradability and water cooling might end up making it into the camera that harks back to the era when you bought a rig and expected it to serve you for more than a couple of years.”

    Well said and completely agree.

[Craig Seeman] “My fantasy is that Blackmagic comes out with an affordable high frame rate specific camera. A “Phantom for the rest of us” if you will.

Agreed. Until then we have URSA as an option. Guess that is kind of like a poor man version of a Red One or Arri Alexa? Glad there will be an idiot proof way of setting exposure.

A turnpike reminds me of Adobe CC but at least the toll road has an off ramp. 🙂

[Craig Alan] “Hi David. What is your workflow from Fcp x to resolve and back?”

When shooting in ProRes with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, bring the files into X for editing then export XML, bring into Resolve for correction or grading.

When shooting in raw I go with a workflow similar to what Denver Riddle from Color Grading Central uses:

    Pretty straightforward workflow.

I think my mac is a Quad core but it is Mac Pro 5,1 and a mid 2012 model. Currently there is only 6G of ram installed at present, deciding whether to save up for a the new tube variety or upgrade the one I own now. Render times vary from fast to sluggish so thinking more RAM will be necessary. Motion tends to have the evil beach ball effect upon launch, must wait a few seconds before I can proceed further.

With the new model, at least there will be no need to open up the computer to install additional hardware. Is there any external enclosure that would hold additional cards and connect over thunderbolt? Really want to have as much expansion as possible.

    My reasons:

    1. FCP X is trackless which often equates to faster editing. No need to patch or worry about which tracks are assigned. Granted, tracks can be useful sometimes.
    2. Ability to create a custom title, transition, effect, or generator. From there publish parameters of your choice, save and ready to go.
    3. Better organization, create keywords and collections from finder tags. A small, but very useful feature.
    4. As you do not have pay monthly rent, it is going to be cost effective over the long term.
    5. Improved media management in last version.
    6. Great workflow to and from Resolve 11 when more advanced color correction and grading is needed.

Those are my thoughts, look forward to hearing from others.

Thanks for posting this. Interested in a storage solution for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. Currently have a mid 2012 Mac Pro. Interested in learning about a small studio setup and if Motion could generate live lower thirds and other motion graphics. Thanks again and love to learn all I can.

[Mark Snow] “The pain of missing tracks, the missing features (Keyframing) and the, quite frankly infantile language (Events?) and messy timeline (what are all those compulsory Spaghettis-Links for?) is for the moment outweighed by good will, hope for speed, easiness and curiosity.”

I used to miss tracks at the beginning but now they seem to get in the way. Sure, tracks might be of some use for certain things but the timeline strategy in X works great. Will take getting use to but it is just plain awesome.

Agree with you on keyframes, which has never been a strong point of Final Cut Pro (any version) or with that of another NLE of choice. Motion and After Effects are much better suited, still learning them in Resolve 11 at the moment.

As far as libraries, events, and projects go, this was something else that caused initial confusion. After watching a few videos, it began to make sense. Projects in FCP X are the timeline, the sequence and should not be confused with the terminology used in versions previous. I name the events in the context of the overall program and associated media. For example, a vacation video would have events with the location we went to, keywords would then further organize the clips.
