August 31, 2014 at 6:50 pm in reply to: The Question – An Update On My Choices In NLEs

After reading the original post, I agree with very much everything that was said.

Was hoping that Resolve would be a serious contender but it still needs work. Have not yet tried Lightworks, been curious about it but don’t know much about the software either. For now FCP X is my editing software of choice. Yes, there are a few things that need improving but I see value on the software. I am hopeful with the next OS X release that FCP X will see some useful improvements, to media management (vastly improved since initial blunder of a release), curves for color correction, and better keyframing. Prefer the small stuff be addressed then talk about super cool features at a later time.

On the motion graphics side, for me, Motion is a top notch program. I do not use complex or high end effects, and my work does not call for it. I am more of “less is more” approach, preferring practical effects over plug-ins for practical reasons (no pun intended). Only thing I would like to see added are expressions, which are much more flexible. I do prefer groups over a pre-comp any day.

I did love Adobe products at one time, and still like them very much. Just really don’t care for the subscription only model based on principal. Still no off ramp, or exit strategy as there is no rent-to-buy option available. My other fear is that rent can go up, services or certain software will be cut. Just not a “risk” I am willing to take.

  • The good old linear editing model. I first learned on a system that had no time code, it was the good old reliable control track. Meaning you had to lay down black first but no edit was frame accurate. Was always fun after spending hours of shuttling tape back and forth that a shot was missing in the middle. This meant many more hours of editing. At least hooking up the system was straightforward and no need to worry about your NLE being compatible with the latest OS, not to mention trouble shooting plug-ins that would not work.

One other downside was the low quality analog format we worked with, next generation of tape would look worse then the first. Good, high end quality VHS or S-VHS was the only options available.

One nice thing, however, was one standard frame rate and NTSC, sometimes referred as Never Twice the Same Color, the good old days.

Wish we could just have one standard and it be the only standard. Having to deal with technical details makes editing not so much fun.

I guess one thing with working in X is no need to play “Track Tetris”. I prefer just Tetris, at least it is a game.

Very solid system and great explanation of the workflow involved. Going to write Santa and ask for a system like that, just another 4 months to Christmas!

I wish there was a way to create keywords in Resolve, use the folders in the media pool as events and have that carry over to FCP X when editing. I bring this up as I mainly shoot raw, render out in ProRes with same resolution as the raw files and send it to X for editing.

Tracks are like so totally last century! 🙂

Maybe they will bring back the 8 track. Wait, doesn’t that involve tracks?

I agree and I am tired of that evil spinning beach ball upon launch in Motion. I also have erratic render time in FCP X could be a FireWire speed issue or third-party effects.

I had something similar happen as well. It downloaded the FCP X update and installed no issue. The other two were downloading at the same time, then quit showing the update. Went to the launch pad and it showed the download was still in progress. Then it showed all the updates were downloaded and compete in the App store. Probably just a random glitch.

Would like to see the ability to edit Cinema DNG raw files in their native format and custom curves for color correction. Would like better keyframing as well.

I agree. For me FCP X is a solid choice, especially the integration with Motion at least in the ability of creating of custom effects, transitions, titles and effects. My two cents.

I noticed the math is off as well.
