March 2, 2019 at 3:05 am in reply to: Audio Envelope (Volume) Has No Effect

    Here’s the history.

I last edited this project in October 2018. At that point the envelope worked fine. As a matter of fact, there were many splits, deletes, and joins that I needed to keep. I had only edited this within Vegas.

When I re-opened the project a couple of days ago, the envelope problem emerged. I tried many attempts to fix it, finally deciding to go ahead with the audio edits and face the problem later.

I bought an audio repair app (iZotope RX7) in January, in part to fix some of the many problems with this project audio. In order to keep the re-renders to a minimum, I demuxed the original source video for this project with an external app. I modified the original track and saved it as a new file. I then re-muxed it with the original video track and saved it as a new file.

I then moved the original source file so when I opened the project, Vegas it wouldn’t find it, and redirected it to the newly edited file. Everything worked fine, all my edits were still there and the audio reflected the modifications I’d done with RX7. However, the envelope problem had not disappeared.

I spent a few days trying to find a solution. I then decided that the original audio track was really in such poor condition that another render wouldn’t be detected. I disabled all of the edits I had made in Vegas, (FX, volume adjustments, etc.) except the all-important splits and joins, then rendered the track in Vegas, made my fixes with RX7, then imported it as a new track. Now I didn’t have to worry about remuxing to the original track and the envelope problem didn’t appear on the new track. I muted the original track and continued. That’s where I am today. I’m not going to worry about it unless the problem recurs with another project.

Whew. Did you follow that, or simply fall asleep halfway though?Follow so far?

The end result is I am happy with the results, impressed with RX7’s capabilities, and can go forward with this piece-of-crap amateur movie I promised a friend.

And I can say I’m very impressed with the fast response and helpful tips I received from you and others on this board.
Over the years it’s sometimes been difficult to find answers to Vegas problems beyond the basics. Thanks much.

    George,
That worked fine and was a bit easier, but limiting it to a file with the same name is a restriction if you have many versions. Too bad they didn’t provide for choosing another file. With this restriction I think I’ll return to the original way of loading a replacement when starting Vegas. It gives me the flexibility I need.

I have another problem. When the original file or any replacements are loaded, the audio envelope for volume refuses to work. It behaves the same, but it has no effect. It’s also brown in color, which is not my color assignment. I’ll assign this problem to a different post, but I’ve been chasing this one down a long time.

This video was given to me by a friend (!!!) who asked me to to do some edits and see what I could do to improve the video and audio. Just a “little” job. Hmmmm.

It will give away my age, but my last bike was an original 1987 Honda Hurricane 600 that I rode until 12 years ago, when I moved to Bangkok.

Thanks, George. I’ll give it a try when I get a chance . Right now I’m struggling with the audio portion of one of the files and using a new app that is incredibly complex. My brain feels like it’s about to explode, along with my backside.

By the way, what’s the bike?

Ah, I was hoping avoid the whole renaming of the files. That’s what I do now, or I simply move the file to a new folder. The Replace routine sounded like a substitute, but it just screwed things up.

Oh well, at least I’ve got a working method.

Thanks for all the prompt responses. I figured this would take a couple of days.

When you say “change the name of the file” you mean select the replacement file, correct? And I would do this by clicking once on it?

When I go to Explore Containing Folder, I get a File Manager window. I can select the file, but there is no Open or OK button, so it just sits there. Closing Explorer does nothing other than return me to Vegas. Double-clicking on the new file behaves exactly as you would expect in File Manager — it starts playing the file.

This method only replaces a single event. I have a long video (2 hours) with multiple events, but within the same timeline track. They are mostly splits and joins, but also an audio envelope with edits.

As I said, then opening Vegas and pointing it to a replacement file it works flawlessly. I guess I can continue to do this.

    Thanks for responding.

Sorry, in some other editors they are referred to as nodes. And I’m referring about Audio envelopes, so reducing the thumbnails won’t do any good.

Actually, that scrolls through the tracks if there are too many to fit on the screen. If there aren’t many tracks, it doesn’t do anything on my system.

October 18, 2018 at 4:10 am in reply to: Event Heal Not Working Properly in Vegas Pro 16

Just a note that I am working with the audio track, in case that wasn’t clear.

    1. I selected an 11-second section within a longer clip.
    2. Copy and Pasted it into a new audio track.
    3. Pasted the same clip at the end of the first track. Played the two tracks and they worked fine, in that they played the copied clip twice in succession for a total of 22 seconds.
    4. Selected both clips and choose Event Heal. They combined into a single event of 22 seconds.
    5. Played back and the original copy (11 seconds) played back and the appended clip (duplicate) was totally ignored. Vegas played the first clip beyond the end of the defined area for 22 seconds. In other words, if I had selected and copied 22 contiguous seconds of the audio track as step 1, that’s what it played.

I can re-create this behavior on a new audio track, in a blank area of a pre-existing audio track, in the existing project, a new project, anywhere.
