I just did something worse on my new F3. The card door has a bar on the back, and I closed it before reformatting a card. I ejected my b-card to format my A card… but closed the door and it seeded the card. switched slots and I formatted the wrong card. I had a twenty minute interview on that card that was just shot. Client drove away…. and I nuked the interview. Once you format in the camera, is that media gone for ever. I ejected the card and immediately and at my office googled recovery software and tried three different types. Is there any way to recover media from a card?

I just got off the phone with The NJ repair center and they are looking into it. (and being very nice about it) But thank god for these posts because every time they say no they can’t help, I forward them a link and push back so hopefully Thomas is out there and can shed some light. I’d love to fix the bullet hole I put in my firmware foot.

I’ve been using XD cam footage for years and only since my last update do I see this issue. I use a pro-res 422 easy setup with my AJA hardware and a xd cam sequence setting. Never had to “conform” ever… until this last update, now I do. Or I can switch my sequence to pro-res and render the entire sequence of footage. Either way, I’m loosing time in my edits because of this glitch and it is a glitch. Rendering full with an XD cam sequence didn’t conform two weeks ago and now it does, so it’s an issue.

No, you don’t change your footage at all. Here’s the easiest way to set it up. Use your Transfer software. Than take the folder with all your raw clips into FCP. You set up your easy setup like I discussed above… then Apple N and make a new sequence. By default the sequence will be in the AJA setting. Drag any clip from your bin to the timeline directly. The pop-up window comes up and says “your clip does not match your sequence setting. For best results you should change your sequence to match your clip…” Click yes. Now your clip is in the timeline and it’s XD native but your AJA hardware is working, and your HD monitor will display your footage perfectly. then you can delete that clip and start editing.
for 720p 24 footage use the AJA pro-res 422(HQ) vericam setting in your easy setup and repeat the process.
Whatever the size or frame rate you can experiment and get your AJA to work properly. Then if you are mastering to SD digi-beta. Open control pannel and change your output to SD and let AJA do your down convert. You edit your project in real time without rendering then master to tape with the AJA control panel doing the down convert for you. Looks great. I can e-mail you a project with a dummy clip in it that has the settings all set if you want.

I’ve been using the EX with my FCP and LHe for a while and their are work arounds for most all the frame rates, although a easy setup called AJA-EXcam 1080i60 would be a wonderful thing… It aint happening.
Try using AJA kona LH- 1080i 29.97 apple prores 422 (HQ). That should work. I just post the whole thing in that and then let the card do the down convert when I master out… looks great. -
We have a very simular setup with the HDR-FX1 (as well as a Z1u, V1u,A1u… all fun rigs) with the AJAlhe. We recently purchased two XDCAM EX cameras and love them.
The image qaulity… no comparison. The EX is amazing. The footage we get is comparable to some much higher end shoots we’ve done with Vericam. This ain’t no HDV.The workflow was tricky at first but we love it now. We opted to use the card slot in a laptop and log to a firewire drive (much faster then using the USB on the camera, and we don’t have the card reader.. our bad).
But it works great for us. I recommend getting an AIT tape drive or in our case an optical disk solution to back up the media disks content (if you have a need to protect your original raw) We also back up the quicktime footage with the project separately, giving us the added safety net.But to answer your question… 1000 times yes! This is a serious camera with real pro features that will give you far more flexibility. If you shoot hand held at all get a shoulder brace. This camera CAN NOT be shot hand held. It’s more than just heavy and uncomfortable, It’s like being water boarded…
