Not sure I understand the question … sounds like you’re looking in an AE project that someone else created since it seems that, if you made it, you would know which effect you used.

Anyway, I still do it the old fashioned way … CNTRL+A to select all layers, then E to twirl down all layers that have effects on them.

I didn’t watch the whole thing, but didn’t see anything that can’t be done in AE (read: you’ll get better answers if you refer to specific times, rather than expect folks to watch a whole video, and if you are more specific with your questions).

If you’re referring to the main portions of the video (vs. one particular scene or another), it’s just “film effects” and a texture applied to the video image.

There are very many ways to achieve film effects, but it basically boils down to adding projector flicker and film imperfections (dirt, hair, grain, etc.) … there are tons of plugins nowadays that do all that for you in a few clicks, but it can also be done with AE’s built-in tools.

As far as the texture, there are also a number of ways to achieve that look. You could make a texture of your choice in PS (or in AE if you prefer) and use it with AE’s Texturize filter. You could also put your texture above or below the video layer and use a blend mode of your choice to get the look you like best.

    I hope that helps.

  • Just for reaffirmation sake, I’ll chime in to say that I totally agree with what the others have said … unless you had a cancellation agreement in place and lost another project as a result of the cancellation, let it go … even if your laws would allow you to pursue it, barring any unmentioned details, doing so may accomplish no more than showing bad form on your part.

By the way, from your own initial description of the situation, you seem to be upset with the guy for telling you the truth instead of lying to you, which seems a little odd. That’s not to say that cancelling on you at the last minute was right … just that, by the way you described the situation, it sounds like you would have no issue with it if he had just told you a blatant lie instead.

Let us know/see how it turns out.

  • The thread seems to have been abandoned, but in case you look at it again, there’s on other thought I’ll add … you may hear some of us who’ve been using AE since the early days refer to third-party plugins, but you might also consider that the typical trend has always been that capabilities for which we once had to rely on third-party plugins are eventually built into or bundled with AE (as with Color Finesse, Mocha and Cycore, as well as new tools like the Roto Brush, Puppet Tool, Text Presets, etc.). So, AE has made great strides in recent years and, while I’m not saying there is never a need for plugins, the need is now far less frequent and far more specific than ever … if you don’t really have a specific need, why waste the money?

This is great to hear so thanks for sharing … I run a small studio and field operation where we currently shoot everything XDCamHD with two PDW-F355’s, but we also need another small cam or two and I’m thinking about EX1s or EX3s for the obvious compatibilty/workflow reasons. So, it’s good to hear that they’re strong cams and I’m very interested to hear from anyone with tips about either the EX cams and/or workflow in general or integrating with XDCamHD or, more specifically, PDW-F355’s (in terms of matching, workflow, etc.). In other words, being that the EX cams use different codecs and media than PDW-F355’s, is there really any specific advantage to sticking with the Sony line other than that they’re quality products? And, are EX1s or EX3s the best route to go for smaller/cheaper add-ons to a PDW-F355 XDCamHD multi-cam setup or is there a better option to consider in a similar price range?

Maybe it’s just me, but I have to ask – why would anyone deliver a final master that’s ready for distribution (or anything other than a watermarked review/approval copy) without payment in full? Indeed, large/reputable companies with AR departments typically require net-30 terms, but they also have to provide credit applications and/or per-projects contracts to vendors in order to establish those terms … it doesn’t sound like this is that kind of client or situation.

  • In that case, you really don’t need to spend money on third-party plugins …

Compositing is one of AE’s primary functions so it has plenty of tools built in and also comes with Mocha, which is very good.

As far as grading, AE has plenty of tools built in for that too and also comes with Color Finesse. If you don’t like Color Finesse for some reason, Colorista is great too, but it’s more than $200. If you don’t like either of those, the next step is really to go to a standalone grading program, which will be well beyond $200.

Is there some particular compositing or grading task you need to do that AE’s built-tools and bundled tools can’t do?
